Sharks fightback stuns Reds

The Sharks have beaten the Reds by 27 points to 22 in Durban, after a stuttering start that saw the visitors race away to a 17-0 lead after half an hour. Each side scored three tries in an exciting game played out at a wet and windy Kings Park.

The Sharks suffered an injury setback ahead of the kick-off, with JP Pietersen’s late withdrawal prompting a midfield reshuffle which was duly exploited by the visitors. First-half tries by Reds hooker Jake Hanson and flanker Scott Higginbotham had the home side looking dead and buried as the Queenslanders seemed to find yawning gaps to run through at will. With 10 minutes left to play in the half, though, the Sharks flicked the switch and a lovely break by Charl McLeod saw replacement lock Jandre Marais, in his first Super Rugby game, barge over from 5 metres out.

The Sharks had suffered yet another second-row injury prior to this, with Steven Sykes stretchered off with what looks like a serious knee injury.

Lambie added the two before a cynical spear tackle by Digby Ioane on Marcell Coetzee – which should have been a straight red yet somehow wasn’t – saw the Sharks flyhalf add three more, to leave his side trailing 10-17 at the break.

The second half was all Sharks, though, with tries by Riaan Viljoen and captain Keegan Daniel sandwiching an against-the-run score by Reds replacement back Nick Frisbee. Lambie’s superior kicking display say the hosts sneak the match by five points, although the Sharks will take much comfort from the scoreline of 27-5 in the last 50 minutes of the game.

A number of important men came off injured, though, with Sykes, Jannie du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst and Charl McLeod all joining Pietersen under a cloud, ahead of the team’s Sunday departure. Next week’s problems can wait, though, because tonight, the Sharks stood up for their fans and recorded a remarkable win that deserves to be talked about for many seasons to come.

Scorers: Sharks (27): Tries Jandre Marais, Riaan Viljoen, Keegan Daniel. Conversions: Pat Lambie 3. Penalties Lambie 2.
Reds (22): Tries Jake Hanson, Scott Higginbotham, Nick Frisbee. Conversions: Mike Harris, Ben Lucas. Penalty: Ben Lucas

  • Man oh man, I’m thrilled beyond belief!! When last did we see the kind of mental toughness required to overturn a 17-0 deficit against the current champions from a Sharks team!? Too many times have we had uber-talented squads who were just unable to hold their sh*t together. This is special, comrades, very, very special.

  • Well done to our Sharks. Now that is sure a confidence booster to get a win from coming from zip down to the Reds 17 at one stage.

Just wish we can click for the whole game and not parts of a game. If we do we could beat any team. Our first half was terrible but the 2nd half sure made up for it.

Really hope that none of our players are injured for the tour. It looks like Sykes will be but really hoping none of the rest will be.

Does anyone know what injury JPP pick up that kept him out of the game? He sure was missed tonight. Thought Mcleod had a good game too so do hope he is ready to travel tomorrow and not injured. Well that goes for the rest of the walking wounded tonight.

Anyhow just so damn pleased we won this one. WE beat them in 2010 at the Tank and we done it again…..

Great character shown today. The defence was excellent, and we showed great hunger on attack – credit to Keegan for his leadership there.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 20) : I was so scared we were going to opt for the three points instead taking another scrum at one point. Glad Keegan and Bissie backed themselves there. There was a similar situation in the Stormers game where we went for the kick instead so I’m glad the confidence has grown in that department.

What a debut from Jandre, very well played. Marcell as brilliant as always. Wiehahn was awesome when he came on. Looks like we should use him as an impact player. Charl McLeod = Brilliant!

• Well done boys!!!!!! After Sykes and Du Plessis departure, 5 youngsters of which Bresler was the oldest. Just 24 and they really stood their ground in the scrums. Jandre and Anton make a good pair playing u21 and vodacom cup together. Everybody must be proud of the team. Surely Plum seems to have more confidence in the youngsters as before offering them the opportunity to play. They usually got stuck on the bench for an entire match, boys you did us all proud.

  • Very happy with the win, but a few casualties, any updates on JP, Sykes, Wiehan, Jannie, Charl and anyone else that was injured? Anton and Jandre showed they can hold their own in the second row, but if we lose Jannie or Wiehan or both this win may just be the bittersweet pinnacle of our season

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 38) : They just looked like the best combo. Think a couple of the senior locks might well be fighting it out for a bench spot,if these two continue in the manner that they’re playing,Bresler gonna need a bit of work with the lineouts, but they have the potential to be the best Sharks lock combo I have seen in a while
