Sharks save a tour spot… but for whom?

The Sharks have opted to take only 25 players on tour to the Antipodes, meaning there is a spot left open for a player to join them later on.

The squad departs Durban on Sunday morning, headed for Sydney, where they will play the Waratahs next week. With none of Ross Skeate, Jean Deysel, Kyle Cooper or Conrad Hoffmann included in the party, the chances are that the coaches will call for one of those players ahead of the New Zealand leg, with Deysel perhaps the most likely candidate. Skeate was forced out of this afternoon’s clash against the Reds as the result of a disc lesion in his neck and will be rested for a week, before re-assessment. The prognosis doesn’t look good for the big lock, though, with 3 weeks out considered the best-case scenario.

Griquas prop Janro van Niekerk has been added to a front row unit comprising Dale Chadwick, Jannie du Plessis and Wors Herbst, pretty much as expected. Bismarkc du Plessis and Craig Burden are the hookers, while Skeate’s injury has opened up a tour spot for Jandre Marais, who should make his Super Rugby debut against the Reds this afternoon. Anton Bresler and Steven Sykes are the other locks.

The absence of Deysel (or Tera Mtembu, for that matter) means that the side will depart with only four loose forwards in captain Keegan Daniel, Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts and Marcell Coetzee and that factor must be something of a concern ahead of the tour. Perhaps Bresler could be used as a makeshift flank if injury strikes – that would weaken the lock resources considerably, though.

Amongst the backs, the side appears to be a little heavy in midfield, with Paul Jordaan and Marius Joubert both included, along with the entire back division for this afternoon’s match, which already includes centre options in Tim Whitehead, Meyer Bosman and JP Pietersen. Charl McLeod, Fred Michalak and Pat Lambie will cover the halfback positions between them, while Odwa Ndungane, Lwazi Mvovo, Riaan Viljoen and Louis Ludik make up the outside back division.

Sharks tour group:
Forwards (13): Dale Chadwick, Janro van Niekerk, Bismarck du Plessis, Craig Burden, Jannie du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst, Steven Sykes, Anton Bresler, Jandre Marais, Marcell Coetzee, Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts, Keegan Daniel (capt)
Backs (12): Charl McLeod, Frederic Michalak, Patrick Lambie, Tim Whitehead, Meyer Bosman, JP Pietersen, Marius Joubert, Paul Jordaan, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Riaan Viljoen, Louis Ludik

  • 4-8 looks vulnerable. We have the 7 who should play, but no cover at all should anything happen

  • Need to get Deysel out there as soon as he is ready…Alberts is our only 7, and Coetzee needs a break soon…so hope Deysel plays some Vodacom Cup Rugby next week and then joins the squad for our 2nd tour game or at latest our 3rd tour game.

I really think PSDT would’ve been a better option than Marais because of his ability to play as a 7 aswell; hopefully it doesn’t come to bite us in the rear not having any real 7 cover until Deysel joins the team.

Skeate joining the squad? Not benificial, we need Deysel. Alberts and Deysel can cover lock. Doc said, Skeate is gonna have an op. in a week and if he doesn’t need an op. he will be rested for 3 weeks…so the math tells us that he’s not gonna join the tour squad.

  • Too many backs 4 me…I would’ve gone Ludik out and PSDT in. We need backup in the forwards, the outside backs?? Why would we choose to have backup for them over backuo for lock and 7? Jordaan can play wing, lambie 15, odwa 15, JPP wing and 15…Why do we need Ludik over a PSDT?

  • @JJR (Comment 4) : dude…. you are over-hyping PSDT to a frankly ridiculous extent.

What has the kid done to warrant selection over Jandre? Please explain it to me. Every report I’ve read of the Border match suggested Jandre was the standout player. Piet-Steph is young and very promising, but he will benefit greatly from a full Vodacom Cup campaign and hopefully make his debut during the Currie Cup.

If anything, I can’t understand why we’ve taken Marius Joubert AND Paul Jordaan when we already have 3 centres. Ludik is our only backup in the outside backs and simply has to be there.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : I have said it before, i’m not saying he is better than Marais, yet. I just want him(On tour) because of his ability to play 7 aswell, which as we all know, if we don’t have adequate rotation for our guys playing 7, we often run into injury problems…i don’t want that to happen, again. On tour i want versatile players.

If Deysel was in this touring squad right now i would not have even have mentioned PSDT; because i would then be happy that we have all positions well covered.

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 6) : IF Deysel was in the touring squad we would not need PSDT…Marais would then be the better option. Just worried that without Deysel there, as we can claerly see we are short of looseforward cover…Only 4 looseforwards! They will probably use Burden as a looseforward if we run into problems, but that is not ideal and we can avoid having to do so with a slightly more forward thinking selctions regarding our tour squad.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : It cost us that he wasn’t involved in the first 2 weeks didn’t it? We have seen how well he can carry even last year in U21′s.

First 2 games we struggled to get momentum from our forwards…we had no balance in our pack the first 2 weeks…was too light, and with South African derbies having a light pack is not gonna work for you on most occasions. Just PSDT off the bench for, would’ve have been a great help to coetzee in those first 2 games…Coetzee was marked by 3 guys everytime he got the ball…with nobody knowing who Du toit really is yet, he would’ve had alot more chances to run at 1 man and not 3.

  • @JJR (Comment 13) : I think you missed Rob’s point in his comment 11. Did you watch the warm-up/trial games? If so did you see any evidence that du Toit at 7 was anything other than an experiment? Did you see any evidence that du Toit is ready for Super rugby? The fact that he dropped out of the picture after two games means that the coaching staff probably didn’t.

  • @war1 (Comment 14) : I did get it, my brother watched Du toit in the game against Boland, and he told me du toit was by far the best ball carrier in the game, and that often 2 guys were needed to bring him down.

Don’t think any of us wants to see a light loose trio for The Sharks, again…whenever we have had a light combination we have lost or performed well below our potential. I don’t want us forced to playing a light loose trio on heavy new zealand fields because we don’t have the backup on tour. That’s all, i just want the best for The Sharks. I would just rather be safe than sorry when it comes to tour; not having any real looseforward backup until Deysel jpoins the squad is a bit risky and could cost us some points…i just don’t want to see that happen.

And how can we 100% trust the coaching staff? I mean we have Marius Joubert on our books(and paying him a crap load) and they dicided to play S. terblanche for a good while over Adi Jacobs in the past season, which most would agree wasn’t good for The Sharks. It was obvious Adi was more deserving of the 13 jersey than Stef was.

  • We take no wins for granted and are motivated to win every game on tour but which games would you guys target as must wins?

I think we should be able to beat the Brumbies and maybe the Blues. Waratahs are tough at home but I feel they’re not as strong as in recent years. Canes playing decent rugby at the monent so not sure if we’ll get anything out of that game

I think Plum has done enough to show that he will back youngsters that he thinks can play at this level. I asked a few weeks back, what else must Plum do to show us that he is willing to back youngsters?? Let PSDT have a full CC first. If he is as good as people think he is, why have we not have heard great reviews about him??

  • @JJR (Comment 38) : In their cases it turned out OK, fair enough. Having said that, the likelihood of a person stepping up to Super Rugby successfully and not suffering significant setbacks is just so much higher if they can be brought up through ascending levels of competition. So if you don’t absolutely have to risk a youngster, then why not develop them in a structured manner?

  • Disappointed at Marius Joubert’s inclusion. For the first time in many years we appear to have an embarrassment of riches at centre. I feel he would have added more value by sharing his experience and acting as mentor to our younger Vodacom Cup players. Even with the news of Wolla’s imminent inclusion, I would still have traded MJ for another forward.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 40) : I wanted him in when Deysel and Alberts were out…so that our loose trio is not so light, and i wanted him on tour because of his versatility…and we only currently have 4 loose forwards in the tour squad; but hearing Deysel joining them next week…we don’t really need Du toit ATM.

So no worries…i never said he is better than anyone…cos he is not better than Alberts, Deysel and Coetzee at 7 and not better than Marais at 4, yet; but he is an option for the bench because he can play lock and looseforward. I don’t like having bench players that can only really cover one position, and in Marais VS Du toit, du toit is faster, so would’nt he give more impact off the bench than Marais would? I think so.

So with Deysel joining the Squad late next week , i’m satisfied we have all positions covered. Plum might have wanted to leave Joubert/Ludik in Durban to accomodate a 3rd hooker and 3rd scrumhalf…well that is what i would’ve done
