The Sharks XV take on Western Province in a televised Vodacom Cup match this afternoon. The game is at Kings Park and serves as the curtain-raiser to the big Sharks-Reds Super Rugby clash later on.

With the elevation of Jandre Marais to the Sharks bench, Westville’s Monde Hadebe will captain the XV for the first time, from the hooking position, while Marais’ younger brother Peet comes into the starting line up in the number 4 jersey. With 11 of the match 22 having represented the Sharks at Currie Cup or Super Rugby level (and a 12th, Wandi Mjekevu having played Super Rugby for the Lions) there’s a fair bit of experience in the ranks; that said, Province have a fair few stalwarts in their ranks too, including Sharks veteran Deon Carstens, starting in the number 3 jersey.

Marius Joubert, playing in the number 12 jersey, is the Sharks XV’s most experienced campaigner, while Conrad Hoffmann will be introduced off the banch as part of his comeback from a pectoral muscle injury sustained in pre-season.

Kick-off in Durban is at 14h45.

Sharks XV (highest honours in parentheses): 15 Gouws Prinsloo (CC), 14 Sbura Sithole (CC), 13 Paul Jordaan (SR), 12 Marius Joubert (Test), 11 Wandile Mjekevu (SR), 10 Fred Zeilinga (VC), 9 Cobus Reinach (CC), 8 Tera Mtembu (SR), 7 Bry Stander (VC), 6 Francois Kleinhans (CC), 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit (VC), 4 Peet Marais (CC), 3 Nick Schonert (VC), 2 Monde Hadebe (CC) (Captain), 1 Danie Mienie (VC)

  • Guys we are standing outside the gates. Game starts in 20 and do not want to let us in. Can you believe this it is really unfair. Can’t they open the gates earlier for the curtain raisers?????

  • @robdylan (Comment 73) : @slammerboy (Comment 74) : I am still waiting to hear how much of the 75-3 demolition was due to Josh Stander, apparently he has the sort of contract that Stefan Ungerer had with the Bulls, which means that if a better offer were to come along then Josh could get out of it as it was signed before he turned 18 and Josh turned 18 on the 1st January. So they might be looking to secure his services once and for all.
