Where there is smoke, there is fire…?

Once again, if media reports are to be believed….rumours have once again surfaced. Could the Wunderkind be returning? Could he be returning to… The Sharks?

It was once again reported in Rapport this morning that the former Sharks player, Francois Steyn, could be returning to South Africa, to further his already World Cup winning, Bok career.

Apparently Gerrie Swart, Steyn’s agent has confirmed that Steyn would take a significant income loss (don’t we KNOW this?!), to return to South Africa, to be able to play for the Boks, once again.

“Coach, the day you coach The Bokke, I will return to South Africa.”  This undertaking was made by Steyn on 27 August 2010. Apparently Steyn has been in talks with new Springbok Coach, Heyneke Meyer. Meyer, unlike his predecessors, have “opted” to choose the best available team for Bok clashes, and that Steyn would be and integral part of this “best team”.

It was further suggested that Steyn would be making a return to his former franchise, The Sharks, and that he would play ONLY in his best position. That being inside centre.

Whether rumour can be believed, I won’t know. The part of the rumour I can believe is that Frans will return to SA. Period. I think the lighty has grown up. I think he misses his country. I think he WANTS to play for his country. I think he wants to do his country proud. And,  I believe he WILL.

I, for one, would not mind him doing his “practising” for The Boks, at The Sharks.

Frans has played 47 test for SA (20 as centre, 19 at fullback, 5 at flyhalf and 3 at wing). His winning percentage in tests is 74% (won 35, lost 12)

Frans has apparently indicated that he will not be available for his 50th test against England (if he would be playing for SA in all the tests), as he really would not like to miss out on his wedding!

  • WHAT A LOAD OF CRAP!!! This is what you call bullsh*&%*t marketing at it ‘s best! The PLONKER earns Euros, must pay European taxes due to his 181day/90day rule and must PAY to live in Europe. When you work and live in Europe, it’s not that rewarding financially at all because it’s FREAKING expensive to live here. It would be a totally different story if he earned Euros sent to SA and he was still seen as a resident taxpayer in SA so this earning less bull coming home..you sound like the US Army propoganda, “Never leave a Man behind”……your credibility just went down the toilet after you said that. I’m a South African in Brussels, working for a UK firm on my way to China so don’t try to bullsh*^*t people Steyn… your agent Gerrie Swart is abviously not very at his job.

Coach…does it have to mean that he was coached by that person…as far as I know, Meyer has been a coach for quite some time…and he was a huge candidate when PDiv was chosen…so perhaps it was a respectful way of addressing Meyer after most of the country thought Meyer should have been the chosen one? Just a guess though…all is not black and white, so to speak..

  • Well well, if this does come to pass, we could have Frans at 12, JPP at 13, and Tim on the bench able to cover both. A team that only a few months ago had serious centre problems would then have to bench one of the best centres in the country!

  • I wouldn’t mind seeing Steyn back.

    10. Lambie
    11. Mvovo
    12. Steyn
    13. Whitehead
    14. JP
    15. Viljoen

However, when we start hearing things such as “he will move back ONLY if he plays 12″ that’s when I start thinking it might be best if he goes elsewhere.

We don’t want primadonnas at the Sharks.

  • This hoary old chestnut yet again? I’ll believe it when I see it.

Anyway, I’m getting super-excited with the vision that young Whitehead has shown, and I’m not eager to lose JP’s ability to break the line at 13.

Frans is an incredibly talented footballer, but I’m not sure he is what the Sharks need under their new gameplan.

  • @Ice (Comment 18) : He has loads of talent but he is actually pretty average playing for Racing with the odd flash of brilliance, he is the best at Racing. He misses more often than not with his drop goals. His time in France has not enhanced him as a player. He might have grown up which is a good thing.

  • @Ice (Comment 18) :
I’m not talking about development; I’m talking about what’s best for the team. Whitehead has already shown that he knows how to unleash our strike-runners – I’ve yet to see Frans do this with similar success: his talents are more individual in nature.

    @lostfish (Comment 19) :
That’s how I see it too: Frans hasn’t really grown into the player he could be yet. But maybe a stint back home will complete the evolution.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 20) : I watch quite a bit of the Top 14 and there are better performing 12′s in France than Steyn. I don’t feel Racing was the best club for him to go to. They were offering him the most money but he would have been better off going to a different club. I hope that if Steyn does come back to SA that he does grow into the player he can be.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 17) : Look your eyes might be all lit up with stars considering Whitehead. But he hasn’t really proved anything yet I’m afraid. Looks very promising I know but any team in SA will be foolish to say no to Steyn. The guy is poor class. With Lambie, Steyn and Viljoen in the team, imagine how strong our kicking will be. IMO Steyn will fit our game plan perfectly as we are using our backline more now.

Didn’t say Frans isn’t talented – but the point is that his talents are less on creating for others, and more about doing something special on his own.

Nothing wrong with that, but it all comes down to what’s best for the team, and to my mind, the Sharks need a creative player at 12, and I’m not sure that his time in France has helped Frans develop that.

I wouldn’t close the door on him, but I wouldn’t break the bank or ignore Tim for him either.

I’ve never been his greatest fan, to be very honest, but he is a special player.

He is just not someone who I think will add anything to the Sharks that we don’t already have, and his return will hold back the likes of JPP and Tim working in midfield, as well as the development of Jordaan..

No, I’m saying leave a player be, in the case of Alberts, he is coming back from injury, still finding his feet after a lengthy lay off, and you wanna shift him to lock?

A player who can play in multiple positions must not insist on playing in just one. If he is any team player, he would do what is best for the team..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 39) : Why insist that someone plays multiple positions when he wants to specialize? I just do not get it. Yes team comes first etc etc. I agree on all that. But seriously leave the oke to specialise if he want to do that. Let him play his way into the team and prove himself in that position, no freebies, let him prove himself.
Frans plays best when he has competition, when he is an all rounder he seems to relax as he knows he has a spot in the team each week, be in fly half, be it full back, be it wing.

Yes it is expensive to live here but it is expensive to live anywhere nowadays. Down south we say we pay a sunshine tax because the prices of everything including houses are the same as in Paris but we don’t earn the Paris salaries down here. The rugby players even those in the D2 make a very very comfortable living.

  • @Ice (Comment 68) : 100% correct. The bit that says (note the “”s )”Steyn will in future only play inside center” is at the end of a paragraph about Meyer praising Steyn’s ability at 12. The author (BB Harmse) doesn’t specify if that line is his own, Meyer’s, or my garden tap’s line.

  • Rapports version does however say : “Steyn gaan voortaan net binnesenter speel” – but it is not Steyn who said that. It almost suggests that it is Meyer..
