Sharks arrive in Sydney

A number of tweets have confirmed that the Sharks tour squad has arrived safely in Sydney, where they will stay for the better part of the next fortnight as they prepare for games against the Waratahs and Brumbies.

As is generally the case, the team has opted to establish themselves in a single location – and will make the three-hour journey to Canberra by bus ahead of next weekend’s Brumbies game, rather than relocate to the sleepy capital after playing the Tahs. The Sharks have always prided themselves on having a good time on tour, rather than sitting in their rooms moping about missing family back home and the bright lights of Sydney generally lend themselves more to that sort of thing than Canberra would, where there’s frankly nothing going on at all.

As reported yesterday, only 23 players left Durban, with an extra lock and prop likely to fly out in the next 24 hours to meet up with the squad ahead of Saturday’s clash, which kicks off at the somewhat anti-social hour of 06h35 (SA time). With only 10 fit forwards currently in the group, the Sharks are going to have to pull out all the stops to field a competitive pack against the Waratahs this weekend.

Here is the list of players currently on tour:

Props: Dale Chadwick, Jannie du Plessis, Wiehahn Herbst*
Hookers: Bismarck du Plessis, Craig Burden
Locks: Anton Bresler, Jandre Marais
Loosies: Keegan Daniel, Jacques Botes, Willem Alberts, Marcell Coetzee
Halfbacks: Charl McLeod, Fred Michalak, Pat Lambie
Centres: Meyer Bosman, Tim Whitehead, JP Pietersen*, Marius Joubert, Paul Jordaan
Outside backs: Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Riaan Viljoen, Louis Ludik

* denotes a player out of contention for the opening match due to injury.

And if that team can beat the Reds, after being down by 17 points, they can beat the Waratahs..

  • I asked for 10 points before heading out on tour, and the boys gave me 11 points.

Please can I have another 10 points from the tour?!

  • @Uli (Comment 4) :

    Why?

    We have two superb locks?

ANd then we are all going to whinge about a light trio with Botes and Daniel playing together..

    Silly..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Jy is tevrede met maar min ;-)

I think we should be close to that 10 before leaving for NZ, Playing against a somewhat average Waratahs team and a Brumbies team that is punching well above their weight at the moment(we should have enough to beat them) I am looking for at least 9 points before going to NZ

In NZ things is a bit tougher with the Hurricanes on a bit of a high and a struggling Blues team(that will come right sooner than later I think ), the Sharks must be targeting one of those games for a win and if we lose it must be that we get a bonus point. I am looking for 14 points (witch is not impossible), Sharks should be looking to win at least 3/4 games. Hell if the teams keep playing like they are now we could actually win all our games(I know this will not happen, but lets be honest our most difficult tour game is the Blues and they are not looking too great at the moment.)

  • @Uli (Comment 4) : with only 4 loose forwards in the squad, that’s kind of a dumb call.

  • @BR (Comment 6) :

The call for 10 points is a minimum, more than that will be a bonus in my eyes..

The 10 is what we need to stay on course for a playoff spot, in my opinion..

  • @Uli (Comment 4) : We need him more in the loose trio to bulk it up.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 5) :Id rather complain about light loosies than light locks…

@robdylan (Comment 7) : vs only 2 locks in the squad? Seems ok to me.

On the one thread you ask that Frans Steyn be given his position and not be shuffled around, yet here you want Alberts to be shifted?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 17) : He would’ve been better left in SA playing VC Cup and only if we were in dire straits would we need to call him.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 17) : We also have Burden on tour who isn’t playing hooker so he could always plug the gap ahead of MJ

We already have a 4 better centre’s, even though JPP will miss the first game..

    Why have a fifth one?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 22) : Yup, I fail to see the logic behind him being on tour. Waste of space and money in his flight and accommodation.

  • @lostfish (Comment 23) :

Then I’d rather take along somebody who is a young backup, who will ONLY be used if injuries hit.. Like a young Sharks XV prop..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 24) : It makes more sense to take a prop, if we go down a prop we are screwed. We have 2 backup in the centres.
