Reds winger, Digby Ioane got a big 5 week slap on the wrist for his tip tackle on Sharks young star, Marcell Coetzee.

The SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Mike Heron has accepted a guilty plea from Ioane for contravening Law 10.4 (j), Lifting a player from the ground and dropping or driving that player into the ground is dangerous play, after he was cited following a Super Rugby Match at the Weekend, after he lifted Marcell Coetzee in a tackle and drove him backwards so Coetzee hit the ground in a dangerous position.

Ioane has been suspended from all forms of the game for five weeks up to and including Saturday 21st  April 2012.

The incident occurred in the 40th minute of the match between the Sharks and Reds played in Durban at Mr Price Kings Park on Saturday 17th March.

“After reviewing the relevant material (including footage and reports on the SANZAR intranet), I followed the Duty JO process via telephone calls with the player, his coach and the Reds team manager.  At the end of that process, I gave an indication of penalty of five weeks’ suspension.  After having time to consider that, the player accepted that suspension.”

Heron stated in his findings. “I find that the tackle was executed deliberately in the sense that he intended to lift the player and drive him backwards.  The player was tipped beyond the horizontal and driven backwards to the ground (and objectively assessed was clearly dangerous).  I accept, however, that there was no intention to injure the player or to drive him forcefully into the ground. Rather, Ioane has executed the tackle with poor technique and was reckless as to the danger caused. In all the circumstances, I find that the tackle was mid-range and warrants an entry point of six weeks.”

Because of Ioane’s history another week was added and for deterrence yet another.

To recognise and acknowledge the immediate guilty plea and remorse, and other mitigating factors, Heron reduced the sanction by three weeks, resulting in an ultimate sanction of five weeks.

  • Rob – what is an off field yellow card and how does it work? Does the player have to sit off for 10 mins in the next game or what?

  • oh right… I see now :)

The thing you have to realise, though, is that the cards were changed during the citing process.

So Hougaard’s was changed from red to yellow, whereas Digby’s moved in the other direction.

  • @lostfish (Comment 15) : @robdylan (Comment 11) :

He initially got 6weeks, Heron added two weeks, one for deterrence, and one because it was not the first time he was supspended for the same offence. HOWEVER, 3 of the 5 weeks was suspended and the sentence reduced to actual FIVE weeks, due to the fact that he pleaded guilty immediatelty and the fact that Heron thought it was his tackling technique that was faulty and not necessarily to injure the player.

  • @Ice (Comment 22) : ok thanks… like I said, I didn’t actually read the article.

But if you’re looking at Ioane’s “pre-reduced” sentence, then you must compare it to Hougaard’s as well… he also got time off for the guilty plea.

  • @Ice (Comment 25) : 3 weeks, reduced to 1.

“The footage showed Hougaard lifting the opposing player into the air and dropping him on to the ground. The Cheetahs number 13 fell backwards and twisted on to his right shoulder. He was not injured and continued unaffected. A subsequent report from the Cheetahs confirmed that (as did Mr Swart for the player). Hougaard immediately acknowledged his wrong. An unusual feature was the involvement of another Cheetahs player, initially supporting the tackled player and then not continuing to do so. It was submitted, and I accept, that this appears to have inadvertently contributed to Hougaard failing to realise that the player would drop to the ground. In my view this was a brief incident of dangerous play, which resulted in a breach of rule 10.4(j), without any intent to drop the player on to the ground. Accordingly, I find the entry point low end (three weeks). The player immediately accepted responsibility and pleaded guilty. He has no disciplinary record, is of good character and this is his first card of any type I am told. The circumstances of the tackle were unusual and there was no injury or lasting impact on the tackled player. In addition, Hougaard has the embarrassment of being sent from the field and the record that comes with that. In all the circumstances therefore I reduced the penalty to one weeks suspension. I emphasise that this was an unusual case and that it should not be regarded as setting any precedent in respect of future tackles of this sort.””
