The Lions team to face the Stormers at Coca Cola Park this Saturday has been announced, with the team struggling with injuries after their bye weekend. Andries Coetzee, that played against the Sharks two weeks ago following Jantjies’ injury, will start on the wing.

In other backline changes, Butch James will take on the pivot role while Tiaan Meyer has a shot at starting in the nine jersey following the injury to Michael Bondesio. Jaco Taute is shifted to outside centre, where he will link up with Doppies la Grange. James Kamana will start at fullback while Deon van Rensburg completes the backline.

Pat Cilliers returns to boost the front row, coming in on the tighthead side and joining Caylib Oosthuizen and Callie Visagie. Franco van der Merwe and Marius Coetzer will continue in the second row, with no sign of Hendrik Roodt in the match 22.

Ross Cronjé will sit on the bench for the first time, and could make his Super Rugby debut for the Lions. He is joined by another first timer, Ruan Combrinck, who will make his debut should he take the field.

Lions: James Kamana; Deon van Rensburg, Jaco Taute, Doppies la Grange, Andries Coetzee; Butch James, Tian Meyer; Warren Whiteley, Josh Strauss (Capt), Derrick Minnie, Marius Coetzer, Franco van der Merwe, Pat Cilliers, Callie Visagie, Caylib Oosthuizen.

Reserves: Martin Bezuidenhout, Jacobie Adriaanse, Stephan Greeff, Baywatch Grobbelaar, Ross Cronjé, Michael Killian, Ruan Combrinck.

  • Couple of Michaelhouse old boys on the bench. Where is Hendrik Roodt? Thought he’d be a shoe in

  • I’m very happy for Ross, getting a chance from the bench..

He could well get a good few minutes, as Meyer is carrying a niggle going into the game..

  • Yea well, when the sh1t hits the fan, but luckily John can pick from a UJ squad that’s been impressive in the Varsity Cup and to be honest I like this team selection.

I know a few Lions supporters are having an orgasm now that Taute has been included at outside centre.

Still going for a Stomers win though. Stomers unbeaten in Johannesburg in SupeRugby since 2000.

  • @LionsinPTA (Comment 4) :

Taute at 13 is exciting, but I am not in favour of shifting a player around. I suppose it is only because of the injuries to Waylon etc..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) : Roodt hasn’t had much luck has he. His Waratahs move didn’t work out and looks like his Lions move is not panning out too well either. Maybe he should have gone to the Cheetahs

It could work really well, shifting him closer to the ball..

I also really like Kamana at fullback, I think he is full of running from the back, same as Taute, so you are not losing that aspect..

  • Ruan Combrink!! Hope he gets a chance off the bench to smash the team he supports  Good to see another MHS guy come through, i also think “Dibbs” the Lions VC captain should also get a chance soon, great attacking minded 12.

Crazy how out of 200 Michaelhouse boys Cilliers, Rhodes, Cronje’s, Mark Richards, Lambie and Ruan Combrink have played Senior CC/Superugby or Boks and then Murray de Bruyn, Roberts’s older brother was also a Lions U/21 star and then still Louis Albertse could also still come through at the Lions.

Funny how most end up in Jo’burg…maybe they following the Red and White colours?

If Combrinck comes on I’m sure he’ll be lining up Lambie! 2008 was a decent year for Michaelhouse

  • @slammerboy (Comment 18) : Ja, i know was my year…1st XV could have been even better…there were players playing 3rd team that could’ve challenged first team players, but cos 1st and 2nd’s trained together…3rd team got isolated a bit; but a really good year. Had 3 really big props Gary Mann, Chenoweth “Chimpa” and Louis Albertse, that was key to getting MHS’s always exciting backs going forward.

Ntsholo Setlaba and James Tatham also capatained and made Debut for Ikeys this year.

But Mitchell is not an idiot, he won’t let a half decent oke sit in the Vodacom Cup team for nothing?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 16) :

Killian as far as I am aware is carrying a niggle and they are phasing him back. His hamstring wasnt right against the Hurricanes, when Jane burnt him on the outside you could see he wasnt running back at full tilt – doubt he would have caught him anyway but he hasnt been playing at full fitness. I think Coetzee kicks for posts as well, so there might be some some secondary aspect – ie if Butch is having a wayward kicking spell, then he can take over – or even Taute if necessary. I thought Coetzee had fantastic feet in his little stint on the field agaisnt us but he he looked more suited to 15 or wing. As for Combrink looking forward to seeing him, he is a very very strong runner!

As for Roodt I think he can only really play if there is a Victor Matfield or Andries Bekker type player that can dominate the lineout. Whilst Franco vd Merwe is a decent jumper, I wouldnt say he is dominant in this area, and thus they dont really work as a combination. The problem for Roodt is he never takes any lineout ball which is critical to the attacking brand that the Lions play as it allows the backs to attack from that phase.

  • @JJR (Comment 15) : Robert de Bruyn is still U21 this year – he is definately in the mix and may well get a chance either in S15 or later in the year at CC level. His older brother, Murray, unfortunately, had several major injury set backs that curtailed his rugby career so is now focusing on his studies.
louis Albertse is with the Bulls now – he played in the Super rugby warm up games – expect to see him at vodacom cup level sometime.
Pat Lambie, Ruan Combrinck and Rob de Bruyn shared the MVP award at MHS in 2008. Pat and Ruan competed for the No 15 jersey – a position Pat made his own particularly after being picked as the SA Schools fullback in 2007, his first year in the 1st XV. Ruan Combrinck had to settle for playing wing where he formed an incredible back three in 2007 in particular with lambie and Richards.
Ntsolo Setlaba captained the 2007 side – he also played craven Week that year along with Pat Lambie, Ross & Guy Cronje, Murray de Bruyn and Xillan van Rooyen – mark Richards and Ruan Combrinck were the only two members of that backline not to make it to CWeek that year.

  • @steve (Comment 30) : I doubt Michaelhouse will have a team with that much talent for a while. They generally have decent sides every 5 or so years.

  • @slammerboy (Comment 31) : 2007 and 2008 were exceptional years for MHS
Both sides produced 6 Craven Week players and several Acadamy Week players. Pat Lambie made SA Schools in 2007 and 2008 and Ross cronje (07) and Robert de Bruyn (08) made an SA Schools B side.
Both sides only lost once and ended up ranked 5 or 6 in the country (for what that is worth on the rugby365 rankings).
The 2008 side also had players that didnt play Craven Week that year but went on to star in 2009 like the KZN Craven Week captain Cameron Lindsay and of course Pat Howard

  • The problem is the Lions doesn’t have any continuity due to these injuries, 11 players, more than a third of the Super Rugby squad is injured, but its a good time to see if these youngsters have what is needed, in the long run it will pay dividends
