Deysel to the rescue?

Rumours coming out of Durban suggest that Bok flank Jean Deysel will head to Australia today to join up with the Sharks tour group in Sydney, although there has been no official announcement to confirm this fact.

Deysel has been out of the game since last year’s Currie Cup final, where he aggravated a chronic knee ligament injury that required off-season surgery to repair. Having come through 75 minutes of Friday night’s Vodacom Cup game against Free State unscathed, it seems Deysel is now considered ready to slot in with the Super Rugby group ahead of their must-win clash against the Brumbies this weekend.

Deysel led the Sharks XV to a bonus point victory on Friday night – and also scored a late try to seal the win. His experience will add a huge number of options for the Sharks coaches, with Marcell Coetzee and Keegan Daniel both already having a lot of rugby under their belt this season.

  • Deysel will be a welcome addition, but the team must get their heads in the right space and cut out the silly mistakes. Let hope it was jet lag hampering the youngsters. Positive week Sharkies!

  • The Sharks are just better when Deysel is in the side… If it weren’t for injuries i’d gladly have him as team captain, no disrespect to Keegan intended. A fit Alberts at 8 and Deysel at 7 with Marcelle Coetzee continuing his blistering form at 6 is, in my humble opinion, the best loose trio we can put on the field…

  • I mentioned the 44 missed tackles last week, and got shot down about stats not being viewed in the context of the game. Well as for the Reds the Sharks scraped past them, the Bulls thumped the Reds. Put that into context. This week another 37 tackles missed. Use it, don’t use it.

  • @Megatron (Comment 5) : Not saying he’s a super hero, just that he adds more to the Sharks team than some other loose forwards we have in the squad… The loose trio is more balanced when he’s on the field, there is more competition at the breakdown and more options to bash holes in defensive lines…

  • 5 games played, the Sharks have made 596 tackles missed 147. That means 1 out of every 5 tackle attempted is missed. Not great defensive stats.

  • Commentators in Sharks XV game said on a number of occasions that Deysel was flying out to join up with the touring squad.

@Megatron (Comment 5) : South Africa have far more world class loose forwards than any other nation…Deysel, Vermeulen,Coetzee etc would walk into any other national team.

If Deysel stays FIt he will get his chance, again…if Deysel did make Boks when he should’ve, Sharks would be at least one Currie Cup short right now. Heyneke Meyer will be fair, and choose the best players, and not be like P.Divvy that selects on reputation and not on form.

  • @waje (Comment 11) : It is due to our crappy defensive structure we just shift out…Sharks would maybe think of using a banana defence were the players on the outside push up and then a little later the players on the inside push up once the attacking team is forced towards the forwards…very hard to get over the advantage line and break tackles with that defensive structure. This defensive structure i think is the one the Boks used in 2007 and in 08′ or 09′…it worked very well for the Boks…put a lot of pressure on our opponents.

Hopefully we can accomodate Deysel, Alberts and Coetzee in the same pack…because they make great offensive tackles which is what we need.

  • Deysel didn’t look his sharpest in the XV game – hope he shakes off the rust! I guess I’m also worried that constant injuries may have turned him into a more cautious player.

  • @JJR (Comment 12) : deysel is a sicknote, he never gets to any kind of form, plus his technique at the breakdown will see him get pinged incessantly (watch this space) he is wont not to support his own body weight. last year he was blown a number of times for flopping or diving into rucks, lt’s see if he is intelligent enough to fine tune that aspect to the current pedantic ref interpretations

  • Deysel to the rescue?
Its rather the insistence of Plum to make the daftest substitutions during the match that’s letting us down. Instead of Deysel, I would have opted to take another prop over.

Deysel is far from form. Bet Plum will slot him in as lock on the bench. Marcell played there after all with Burden at flank.

Waratahs is average, played average and won against poor defence. Brumbies will be another kettle of fish all together.

    Deysel for prop :)
