The nominations are open for the 2012 Varsity Cup “Player that Rocks” awards, with two former Sharks age-group pivots in the running to scoop the coveted prizes.

We’ve already discussed how widely represented the Sharks Academy seems to be within the Varsity Cup teams, with most of the competing squads boasting a few young players who have come through the youth systems in Durban. Tukkies, NMMU and UJ in particular are particularly well-stocked with Sharks and it’s the first choice flyhalves of two of these teams that have done particularly well.

24-year-old Wes Dunlop – known as Horse, for reasons best left unexplored – was born in Durban before going on to matriculate at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth. After a year of under 19 rugby with the Mighty Elephants, he played for the Sharks at under 21 and Vodacom Cup level until 2010, before moving on to Tukkies and the Bulls. His younger brother Cam – nicknamed “Pony” – followed a very similar path and is also with Tuks now. Dunlop’s understudy at Tuks is 21-year-old Willie du Plessis, an Affies boy who attended the Sharks Academy after school and played under 19 and under 21 rugby in the black and white jersey.

Across the Jukskei at UJ, it’s Michalhouse’s Guy Cronje who has shot to prominence in the orange jersey. Cronje and his twin brother Ross moved to Johannesburg from Durban at the end of last season after both starring for the Sharks at age-group level. While Ross had been on the fringes of selection for some time, unlucky Guy could only boast a smattering of senior caps dating back to the 2009 Currie Cup.

Cronje and Dunlop have both been nominated in the Back that Rocks category, whilst Dunlop is also a nominee in the overall Player that Rocks category.

Here are all the nominees:

FORWARD THAT ROCKS: (Forward of the Tournament)

Franco ‘Sous’ Mostert (UP-Tuks, lock)
Jono Ross (UP-Tuks, No 8)
Jaco Swanepoel (NMMU, No 8)

BACK THAT ROCKS: (Back of the Tournament)

Clayton Blommetjies (UP-Tuks, fullback)
Guy Cronjé (UJ, flyhalf)
Wesley Dunlop (UP-Tuks, flyhalf)

PLAYER THAT ROCKS: (Player of the Tournament)

Wesley Dunlop (UP-Tuks, flyhalf)
Jono Ross (UP-Tuks, No 8)
Jaco Swanepoel (NMMU, No 8)

  • How ironic would it be if Maties and Pukke are in the final and neither have a nomination?
