All Black kingpin Daniel Carter has been handed his first start of the 2012 Super Rugby season and will wear the familiar number 10 jersey for the Crusaders as they take on the Lions in Joburg on Saturday.

Carter, who has been out of action since last year’s World Cup, where he sustained a groin injury that kept him out of the latter half of the men in black’s march to glory, made his return to top rugby off the bench last week; in that game, the Crusaders beat the Cheetahs 28-21, with a deft touch from Carter setting up the decisive score. Tom Taylor moves from flyhalf to inside centre to accommodate Carter’s return, with Ryan Crotty benching as a result.

In changes to the forward pack, Wyatt Crockett comes in at loose head prop, switching places with Ben Franks, who benches this week, while George Whitelock replaces brother Luke at blind side flank. The latter drops to the bench, replacing Brendan O’Connor in the number 19 jersey, while Tom Donnelly also comes into the squad in place of Ross Kennedy.

Crusaders: 15 Israel Dagg, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Robbie Fruean, 12 Tom Taylor, 11 Zac Guildford, 10 Daniel Carter, 9 Andy Ellis, 8 Kieran Read, 7 Matt Todd, 6 George Whitelock, 5 Samuel Whitelock, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Corey Flynn, 1 Wyatt Crockett.
Replacements: 16 Quentin MacDonald, 17 Ben Franks, 18 Tom Donnelly, 19 Luke Whitelock, 20 Willi Heinz, 21 Ryan Crotty, 22 Tom Marshall.
