The Sharks have finally got a win on the road as they beat the Brumbies in Canberra on Saturday morning. The Sharks managed to score four tries and will welcome the five points, in a match that went down to the wire.

The game started with a three pointer to the Sharks, to which Christian Lealiifano responded to square things up. The Sharks hit back with a try through Riaan Viljoen, his first of two. Fred Michalak missed the conversion, for a five point lead early in the match.

Lealiifano kept the Brumbies within touching distance with a second penalty to bring the Brumbies’ deficit to a mere two points. The Sharks were on the attack when fullback Mogg decided to score a brilliant individual effort, kicking and chasing his own kick to score under the poles. This gave the Brumbies a five point lead after half an hour of play.

Viljoen scored his second soon after, with Odwa intercepting a high pass from the Brumbies, releasing Viljoen after he himself could not get away from the defenders. Michalak converted and the Sharks took back the lead. The Brumbies got a penalty just before half time, to make sure they had the lead going into the break.

The second half got off to a good start for the Sharks, after the Brumbies fumbled the ball in their own 22m after a kick through from the Sharks, only for Willem Alberts to pounce on the mistake and score under the poles. Michalak converted to take a six point lead with a lot of rugby to come.

It took the Brumbies 20 minutes to score their first points of the half, pulling the deficit back to three points. The Brumbies were doing all the playing when the Sharks turned it over and Mvovo scored a brilliant try, backing his own pace to get the bonus point in the bag. Michalak converted for a ten point lead for the Sharks.

The Brumbies did all the running in the final minutes, eventually breaking the defence to score a try and get to within three points, but the Sharks managed to hold on for their first away win of the season.

  • Good win Sharks, very relieved that you managed to hang on for the win.
But what’s with all the kicking?
Almost every time the Sharks got posession they kicked it away straight down the throats of the opponents, allowing the Brumbies to attack with ball in hand and forcing the Sharks to defend.
Pointless kicking almost cost us this one.

  • Thoughts on the win. Positives:
    - 4 tries! BP win! Away from home!
    - There should be no doubt now that MB should be backup flyhalf. I’ve also noticed it in earlier games but wanted it confirmed – looks like he’s added poaching to his skillset.
    - Our discipline was once again good overall. Especially during the Brumbies’ last attacking movement!

    Negatives:
    - We still allow too many points in after we’ve scored.
    - We’re still lacking that killer instinct. The Brumbies looked more spent than we did at the end. I firmly believe it was not necessary for this game to have been as close as it was. The team and fans alike would have been HUGELY disappointed if we had chucked it away at the death.

  • Some more positives:

    - Huge improvement in kick offs
    - Discipline still very good
    - Scrums solid
    - Coetzee and Alberts creating good front-foot ball
    - Some great defense when it counted, including vital turnovers
    - Our missed tackles count way down from previous games
    - We won

    Some more negatives

    - Very poor kicking game
    - Our breakdown skills are way below par
    - Backline more often than not seems planless
    - Going to sleep straight after scoring

  • a BIG positive is the way the log looks.

if we take away the log points the Stormers and Bulls have already received then we will be at the top of the SA conference. After the Stormers v Bulls tonight, we will be 2nd but that suits me.

  • Marcel Coetzee is a great young talent and imho he is destined for higher honours. Unfortunately he is playing a very predictable game at the moment, even though it is still good. But how much better would he be if occasionally he offloaded on attack instead of just making ten meters and then going to ground and re-cycling.
Obviously he always wins the Sharks 10 to 20 meters every time he gets his hands on the ball, and he very rarely, if ever, turns the ball over. Other teams will work him out quite quickly and he will become easier to defend against. Add a passing and off-loading game to his skill set and he will be almost the complete package.

  • @jonnow (Comment 21) : Not knowing how to offload is a problem endemic to SA forwards (and some backs). It´s one of the main reasons we play a game, which struggles to flow. I think Keegan Daniel is one of the few with decent distribution skills.

@rhineshark (Comment 22) : Yes! Flow and unpredictability… we bash it up and go to ground 99% of the time, very easy to defend against and very predictable. SA wide problem.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 20) : A reffing question. Is it illegal to kick the ball out directly from the kick-off after the hooter has gone? Keegan had a bit of an argument with Keith Brown about this. Went sort of like:

Brown to Viljoen: `You can´t kick it out on the full. It´s illegal.´
    Daniel: `No it isn´t.`
    Brown: `Yes it is.`
    Daniel: `No it isn´t…´

    Who was right?

  • @rhineshark (Comment 25) : what would the sanction have been? How would the ref know whether it was deliberate or not? Usually it would be a scrum at half way, but seeing that time was up that would ordinarily have been the end of the game (only a penalty can extend the game in injury time). So I wonder just what Brown would have done had it been kicked straight out – I certainly don’t believe a penalty could have been awarded as this is not in the rules?…

  • @rhineshark (Comment 25) : Brown got it SLIGHTLY wrong. A cock-up from the kick-off after the hooter has gone is also an occasion where play WILL continue. The sanction for doing this will be the same as if the error from the kick-off had occured in regular time.

So we could have kicked it out on the full, but the game would not have ended, the opposition could have chosen a lineout on halfway or for the kick-off to be retaken.

On my phone right now, about to leave work. Will post the relevant clarifications from the IRB as soon as I get to my PC at home.

Ruling in Law by the Designated Members of the Rugby Committee

    Ruling – 2-2010

    Union – WRU

    Law Reference – 5

    Date 11 March ’10

    Request
The WRU request a Ruling related to time at the end of a match:

The request for a Ruling arises from the ending of two recent international matches and is in relation to the way a restart takes place following the referee’s communication that it is to be the “last play” of the match.

If the ball is kicked directly out on the full from the restart it should be left to the referee’s discretion to decide whether:
    (a) If Law 10.2 (a) Intentionally Offending has occurred
    (b) If Law 13.8 Kick offs/ Restarts has been fully complied with.

    Observation:
The Laws relating to Kick Offs/Restarts for 15-a-side matches would benefit immensely from the variation to Law 13.7, 13.8 and 13.9 currently operating for seven-a-side rugby, which are quite specific, in that, it is a free kick to the non-offending team should a team infringe the above.

Ruling of the Designated Members of the Rugby Committee
The Designated Members have ruled that if there has been a score towards the end of the game and there is time for the kick off to take place but time will expire immediately after the kick and the kicker:

    • Does not kick the ball ten metres
    • Kicks the ball directly into touch
    • Kicks the ball dead on or over the opponents touch-in-goal or dead ball line

The referee will offer the non-offending team the options provided by Law 13.7, 13.8 and 13.9 respectively and the match continues until the ball next becomes dead.

    Law 13.

13.7 KICK-OFF OF UNDER 10 METRES AND NOT PLAYED BY AN
    OPPONENT

If the ball does not reach the opponent’s 10-metre line the opposing team has two choices:

To have the ball kicked off again, or
To have a scrum at the centre of the half-way line and they throw in the ball.

13.8 BALL GOES DIRECTLY INTO TOUCH
The ball must land in the field of play. If it is kicked directly into touch the opposing team has three choices:

To have the ball kicked off again, or
To have a scrum at the centre and they have the throw-in, or
    To accept the kick.
If they accept the kick, the lineout is on the half way line. If the ball is blown behind the half way line and goes directly into touch, the lineout is at the place where it went into touch.

13.9 BALL GOES INTO THE IN-GOAL

    (a) If the ball is kicked into the in-goal without having touched or been touched by a player, the opposing team has three choices:
    To ground the ball, or
    To make it dead, or
    To play on.

    (b) If the opposing team grounds the ball, or if they make it dead, or if the ball becomes dead by going into touch-in-goal or on or over the dead ball line, they have two choices:

To have a scrum formed at the centre, and they throw in the ball, or
To have the other team kick off again.

    (c) If they opt to ground the ball or make it dead, they must do so without delay.
Any other action with the ball by a defending player means the player has elected to play on.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 51) : Also very worried…don’t agree with Plum’s tactics especially at the ruck, which explains why we have so many forwards in the backline acting like centres. This then leads to numerous handling errors, wrong decision making and not gaining as many metres as we should with ball in hand cause all the forwards are just shifting the ball from side to side.

  • Pierre totally agree, and do you know why we not us to scratch with the other SA sides? Its called passion! The stormers and bulls have it in plenty. Maybe they get bigger crowd support on match days or maybe they got more home grown players or whatever, but they play like they playing for the boks. Sharks have some of the best players on the planet in their respective positions but they play when they feel like it, not week in and out. Thats the problem. Well thats not the only problem as plum is still running the show.

  • Yep, we all know it deep down. We can all see it. The Stormers and Bulls are better than us. We have fallen behind in the last two or three seasons and it is continuing. They play with more passion. More aggression. More desire. More mental strength.

Something just isn’t right with the Sharks. They seem to play half heartedly. They piss away any lead they may have without fail. There is never a comfortable victory. There is no ruthlessness or sheer bloody mindedness to win, as we saw from both the Stormers and the Bulls today.

I’m afraid Plumtree has had his chances. Finishing 6th, 9th and 6th in 2009, 2010 and 2011 just isn’t good enough and I wouldn’t bet on us finishing higher than 6th this year. We are just too inconsistent. We are mental midgets.

The rest of the coaching support staff appear to have no influence or perhaps they have been in the system for too long, and are too cosy.

Heartbreak warfare. That’s what it feels like every weekend. And it’s just building up to massive disappointment as it does every year.

This is a very pessimistic post but it appears to resonate with the views of others above.

Dale Chadwick hasnt impressed me. He reminds me of Wessel Roux from the bulls. I would like to see Dale get some mongrel and show some attitude on the field.

  • Haven’t read all the comments, but two positives from this game that I want to add is the kick offs, where we won more ball. In previous games this was horrendous.
    And secondly our line outs.

Had i known this I wouldnt have posted. And if that was the best game of the season for Daniel then we may as well put him down as well. You can have odwa he is crap. Yeah intercepted that pass wow!!! A real wing would have scored them selves. Having said that my comments are only based on his speed, his defense was pretty awesome on the day.

  • @Ozbok (Comment 65) :  I believe Daniel is UNDERRATED. He has taken shots to the kidneys as captain for this team’s hardships while maintaining a constant good game. He is growing as a leader and we are getting into the offload and play for space game. He does that real well.Well done Keegan and the boys! An amazing win, taking 5!!!
    My only two Positive gripes:
Dale needs to shape some fat into muscle and become a bit faster. Still goes of his feet at the breakdown.
Kicks were poor and Viljoen needs to put in a lot more time with line kicks. His lack to get us out of the 22 kept the presure on us in the last 15. McLeod and Fred as well. The last couple of minute’s attempts at grubbers (Mcleod, JPP & Viljoen) would have been better employed if we kept ball in hand on attack.
Having said that, they all had great moments in the game as well.
    Lekker to watch!

  • C’mon guys, it is the right of any supporter to question the team’s tactics, selections, strategy, etc. How boring would this place be if we all agreed with each other and congratulated the team no matter how they played?

Look where the “glass half full” view has got the Sharks in the past – nowhere – and yet we are seeing the same mistakes over and over again. And the same mid table mediocrity. And the same tired excuses.

Speak your mind. This site will do well to embrace different views, rather than trying to suppress them in some get-a-long gang way. If the Sharks are not playing well then let’s say so.

As to Keegan Daniel, I must admit being one who questioned whether he is captaincy material. The jury is still out. But what I can say is that he IS the kind of player we should be embracing in SA and at the Sharks. His off loading and intelligent awareness of space are an asset and add an air of unpredictability to his play. I’d much rather have him than a predictable crash ball-go to ground specialist. He is playing well, and I don’t think we can question his “mongrel” and commitment to the cause. But as to how the captaincy is resting on his shoulders, only time will tell.

  • I’ve been optimistic since the beginning of Super10..started posting comments on Sharksworld a while ago, I’ve been positive and have given the team my support for years. Last week I snapped cause I’m tired of seeing the same mistakes week in and week out, mistakes which I believe can be rectified through proper coaching. Lately, I’m not even seeing passion for the jersey from the players. Seniors like Jannie are not delivering at all..we have so many injuries and need him to stand up to show the young guys the way, frankly, he played much better for FS than he has ever played for the Sharks. Maybe we need to play more KZN boys, boys who understand the passion fans have for the Sharks, boys like Marcell Coetzee and Lambie who give their all for jersey. Can’t understand why week in and week out, Bulls players give their all for the team, be it playing against the weakest CC team or the Crusaders. Teams like the Lions who have 12 injuries and 1 Springbok in their team are still able to hold off the Crusaders. All I ask is that the players show us that they want to represent the team. Is that too much to ask for? If Plum’s coaching and his tactics are the problem. Sorry but if we don’t make the semi’s this year I expect management to make the right decision.

On the point itself, I tend to agree with Ozbok – Odwa is a little too slow to pose any threat out on the wing these days. IMO his hands let him down too, often when it counts most. We have a young, fast and talented up ‘n comer in Sithole waiting in the wings.

Therefore his message was sound, in my view.

I said Keegan is overrated. Let me tell you why ill try and include some “solid rugby arguments”. I like my loose forwards to be a certain type of player. 6 is usually the fetcher, which we dont have at the sharks. 7 is a ball carrier ie Albers, Coetzee, Daniel or Deysel. 8 might be up for debate but I like a hard working 8 that is able to carry the ball and get stucking with the fetcher and also has a bit of a bigger build. Kieran Reid from Nz is the perfect 8 imo. At the sharks we had Kanko and he is off the radar. Keegan doesnt pick up off the back of the scrum because he will be stopped and will probably lose ground. HE is good come lineout time but in terms of clearing out getting turnovers and so on he is pretty average. Which is why I think he is a good impact player and good off the bench. I think Keegan’s decision making at times are really bad when he has ball in hand.

I just feel that Odwa deserves a lot of respect having been a faithful servant for so long – and this despite me being a huge fan of Sbu.

For the record, I also turned a bit hostile toward Oupa at the end – so I certainly am not without sin. Doesn’t make it right though.
