The South African domestic cricket season came to an end on Sunday with a one sided final of the MiWay T20 challenge played at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
Before we get to the finalists, let us take a quick look at our Dolphins side and what happened to them in the competition. The Dolphins, as most teams did, signed two international players to boost the team with experience and talent. Shaun Tait withdrew very early due to an injury to his bowling elbow and Chris Gale arrived in Durban with a groin injury with the hope he would be able to be part of the action but he did not recover and was unable to play for the Dolphins. The rest of the season can be described as “down came the rain”. All the teams played 12 games. The Dolphins won 4, lost 3 and no less than 5 games were rained out. One of the losses was caused by rain that ended the game and from a Dolphins supporters point of view we were still in a good place to win that encounter as our best batsman was not even on the park yet. The Dolphins ended 4th on the log but with the format of the competition only the top 3 teams played in the knockout stages.
The most exciting game for me was the semifinal between the Knights and Titans where a 6 from the final ball set up an eliminating super over to decide who was going to the final and who would be watching at home. Behardien from the Titans hit a 6 and a 4 to help his team to set a target of 20 runs for the Knights. Thomas’ bowling was unplayable and he only gave away 6 runs and bowled the Titans into the final as well as the bigger reward, a place in the T20 Championship later this year (which is a greater reward for the teams than actually winning this competition).
The final against the Lions was a one-sided ball game that the Titans won by 45 runs. Something worth mentioning is that although the Titans Proteas were available for selection for this encounter, they decided to stick with the players that had brought them to the final and succeeded in winning the trophy.
Big congratulations to the Titans on a well played tournament.
