The final game for Easter weekend, and quite a game we have coming with the Bulls taking on the Crusaders, two formers champion teams currently struggling to dominate, looking to pick up an important win tonight.

The Bulls come of a tough encounter against the Stormers in Cape Town last weekend, having lost to both the Blues and the Stormers now, will want to come away with at least four points against the travelling New Zealand team.

The Crusaders never looked like they hit top gear against the Lions last weekend, and will have to raise their game significantly to win against a hurting Bulls team back in front of their home crowd. The Bulls team is unchanged from the side that did duty in Cape Town.

Bulls: Zane Kirchner, Akona Ndungane , Johann Sadie, Wynand Olivier, Bjorn Basson, Morne Steyn ,Francois Hougaard , Pierre Spies (c), Jacques Potgieter , CJ Stander , Juandre Kruger , Flip van der Merwe, Werner Kruger , Chiliboy Ralepelle , Dean Greyling.

Replacements: Bongi Mbonambi , Frik Kirsten , Wilhelm Steenkamp , Arno Botha, Jano Vermaak, Louis Fouche JJ Engelbrecht .

Crusaders: Israel Dagg, Sean Maitland, Robbie Fruean, Ryan Crotty, Zac Guildford, Dan Carter, Andy Ellis, Kieran Read (captain), Matt Todd, George Whitelock, Sam Whitelock, Luke Romano, Owen Franks, Corey Flynn, Wyatt Crockett.

Reserves: Quentin MacDonald, Ben Franks, Tom Donnelly, Luke Whitelock, Willi Heinz, Tom Taylor, Tom Marshall.

  • Gee whizz how easy did the Crusaders make scoring tries look at the end there? 3 in the last 5 minutes even if 1 was disallowed.

Interesting question on the disallowed try. Carter was quite clearly blocking Basson from tackling the other Crusaders player, but Carter was behind the ball carrier. Obstruction or not?

  • @siorc (Comment 65) : the bulls did not have ball in hand. If the bulls player did it to Carter, i guess then it might have been obstr. But saders was on attack, so carter to me was right to do so. But then, i might b biased…

  • @Ice (Comment 67) : Hmmm. It just didn’t look right. Almost like American football. So at first glance I thought it was clearly obstruction. But then when you think about it, Carter was running behind the player waiting for the offload – it’s not incumbent on him to move out of the way for an opponent behind him. If he was in front of the Crusader ball carrier, that would be a different matter altogether.

Dunno. Where are the rules kenners when you need them?

  • 10.1 OBSTRUCTION
    (c) Blocking the tackler. A player must not intentionally move or stand in a position that prevents an opponent from tackling a ball carrier.
    Penalty: Penalty Kick

He was intentionally blocking the tackler. He even stuck his arm out to do so.
    Behind/In front does not matter.

    @siorc (Comment 65) :

Don’t be suckered into listening to the commentator or the Captain of the team that has just been penalised.

Here is a clear example of why it does not matter if he is behind.

Odwa Ndungane (using him as an example because it has to be a slow player in the example) breaks down the touchline and is being chased by Matt Dunning (using him as an example because it has to be a player faster than Ndungane in the example)

Dunning is 10m behind Ndungane but gaining quickly. Mvovo sees this and runs in behind Ndungane to shadow him and run intereference so that Dunning can’t get to Ndungane. Legal? Not even close.

I think Carter passed the ball before running obstruction. If he passed the ball then he would have been in front of the ball carrier when he started his obstruction or it would have been a forward pass.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 74) : but the defender was always on Carters outside, Carter did fall back after the pass though, but it is not that basson )or whoever) was actually right next to the runner. Carter could claim that he was running in a supportive position, never gettin in between the defender and the runner as he was always next to the runner.
