The first of two local games tonight sees the battle of the felines as the Cheetahs host the Lions in the reverse fixture of the opening round match, which the Lions just won. The Cheetahs are back from their overseas tour, racking up 11 points and will go into this match with a lot of confidence.

The Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has made only one change to his team that beat the Hurricanes last weekend, with Ashley Johnson, the catalyst off the bench last weekend, coming into the starting line-up with Justin Downey dropping to the bench.

The Lions have had their fair share of injury problems, but will start seeing their players return, such as Elton Jantjies who is back in the starting line-up, meaning that Jaco Taute can move back to his preferred position of fullback, with Butch James and Alwyn Hollenbach doing duty in the midfield.

The interesting match ups from a South African point of view will be the loose trio’s of each of the teams, with Josh Strauss leading the Lions’ trio against that of Brussow, Johnson and van der Westhuizen.

Cheetahs: Hennie Daniller, Ryno Benjamin, Robert Ebersohn, Andries Strauss, Willie le Roux, Johan Goosen, Piet van Zyl, Philip van der Walt, Ashley Johnson, Heinrich Brüssow, Izak van der Westhuizen, George Earle, WP Nel, Adriaan Strauss (captain), Coenie Oosthuizen.

Replacements: Hercu Liebenberg, Trevor Nyakane, Andries Ferreira, Justin Downey, Tewis de Bruyn, Sias Ebersohn, Philip Snyman.

Lions: Jaco Taute, Deon van Rensburg, Alwyn Hollenbach, Butch James, Andries Coetzee, Elton Jantjies, Tian Meyer, Joshua Strauss (captain), Derick Minnie, Cobus Grobbelaar, Franco van der Merwe, Paul Willemse, Patric Cilliers, Martin Bezuidenhout, Caylib Oosthuizen.

Replacements: Callie Visagie, Ruan Dreyer, Marius Coetzer, Etienne Oosthuizen, Michael Bondesio, Lionel Mapoe, James Kamana.

  • Well, its pretty clear the Sharks are currently the 4th best team in the SA conference. That could change, but for now… Fortunately the Lions have set the benchmark for mediocrity

  • @Ben (Comment 29) : They have, but they have only recently learned more patience on attack and developed a more rounded approach. Sharks could learn a lot from them. Hell, on attack, so could the stormers. Stormers defense is still the becnhmark though. Sharks.. well sharks are the best team in the league at getting within 5 meters of their opponents line, then handing them the ball on a silver platter.

  • @Puma (Comment 33) : I disagree. Hes still a weak at scrumtime. Sharks are better off backing the youngsters they have and getting them to round off their game better. Chadwick has potential. Look how well he played against the Brumbies. He just needs a bit of time.

Both have already lost lifelines so will be eliminated if things stay this way.

  • Ok Patric and Cailib played good in the loose but didn’t scrum well, Bezuidenhout was not good but Visagie played his best game but still not good enough, Willemse impressed me but Mitchell was right to only give him 40min, Franco was usual, Coetzer improved the line outs, Grobelaar was the best lion on the field, Minnie was solid, Strauss wasn’t good 3 knocks not acceptable, Meyer didn’t get the ball out fast enough and Bondisio played his best game but still not good enough, Jantjies was quiet, Butch and Alwyn defended the midfield good, van Rensburg had his moments, Coetzee is the best choice at 11 and was unlucky not to score a try, Taute needs to regain the form that made his so dangerous

    Josh Strauss
    Bondesio
    Paul Willemse

all out for the Bulls game. So expect a 92 pointer for the Bulls.
