Sharks XV named for Boland

Sharks XV coach Sean Everitt has, as predicted, named a weakened side to face Boland on Saturday, after a huge number of young stars have been withdrawn due to Baby Bok commitments.

With up to 10 players missing, the pack has a seriously re-jigged look, with a number of club players asked to take the step up. Tighthead prop Frans Hanekom is no stranger to this level of rugby, though, having represented the XV on a few occasions last year. His back up is prop Kurt Schonert, the older brother of Nick, who is on tour with the Sharks Super Rugby squad. Kurt also played a game or two for the Sharks at age-group level. Monde Hadebe starts at hooker with Dean Muir coming in as understudy.

Amongst the locks, former Glenwood lad Brendon Groenewald has been pressed into service as a makeshift number 4, with Stephan Lewies coming onto the bench. Franna Kleinhans is back at open side flank after serving out his suspension, meaning a demotion to the bench for Chris Cloete. Tera Mtembu will captain the side again.

Amongst the backs, the only change to the run-on side sees Gavin Hauptfleisch start at flyhalf in place of Fred Zeilinga. It will be Hauptfleisch’s first start for the Sharks in any competition, after injury sidelined him for all of last year’s under 19 campaign.

  • Just received our local newspaper in Malmesbury, game will now definitely be played in Malmesbury, they apparently said earlier in the week the game would be played in Wellington!! But yeah, just came from the stadium it has a Cricket stadium feeling to it , only 500 people in the stand and 5000 on the grass, biggest event to hit Malmesbury since Johan Sadie and PSDT!

  • Sorry for the boys. Did we miss some of the players like PSDT, Allan Dell?

  • The Boland wing , no 11 broke our line at will, Aplon type of player, we scrambled well today, but Mjekevu and Williams was the weak link , they missed a bunch of tackles and put the whole side under pressure the whole time, for such a big guy Mjekevu did not do alot and seems to have lost some gas, the locks played well and Brendon Groenewald had a very solid game, Gavin Hauptfliesch did not do to much and Prinsloo was solid but it was him failing to collect a kick from Boland that cost us the game at the end, but other wise just steady.

  • PSDT not so much as Dell, man for man one could see the size advantage to Boland and they has some clever moves at the back, 2 bad Bolla could not stay on for the whole game otherwise we could have won!
