Sharks XV up against it

Spare a thought for Sharks XV coaches Sean Everitt and Sean Erasmus this week; the pair of namesakes will want to consolidate their position towards the top of the Vodacom Cup South Section log by beating Boland this weekend; however, they’ll travel to the Cape without a clutch of first-team regulars.

As we reported this morning, Kyle Cooper has now joined Nick Schonert in being summoned to join the Sharks tour. Add to that the loss of Allan Dell and Maks van Dyk to the SA Under 20 training squad and something of a front-row crisis starts to unfold; hell, even 3rd choice hooker Franco Marais has gone up, leaving the coaches without recognised cover outside of Monde Hadebe.

The second row situation is as bad, with Pieter-Steph du Toit and Braam Steyn both in Stellenbosch as well, leaving Peet Marais as the only recognised second rower, Stefan Lewies from last year’s under 19 squad likely to join him. Khaya Majola is missing from the loose forwards, but that loss should hopefully be offset by the return of Francois Kleinhans from suspension, while Brendan Groenewald is another option that the coaches could look at as well.

Things are far less dire amongst the backs, with Shannon Rick likely to come back in to replace Auckland-bound Conrad Hoffmann amongst the only change there. Finding a fit, strong pack of forwards to compete with the plucky Bolanders will be the coaches’ main head ache, though, although there is a chance that any players not picked by Dawie Theron to play Argentina on Saturday may be released for Vodacom Cup duty. Should any of the Sharks boys fall into that group, at least they’ll be in the right part of the country for a quick call-up!

  • @war1 (Comment 9) : Pity, one would think they would show all the Sharks games – some people just dont have the same priorities.

  • Supersport has 8 SD channels and 3 HD channels, why is it that at least 4 of those show soccer 24/7, with almost every game from almost every Euro league shown live, but our rugby boys can’t even get one 24/7 channel to themselves, or have clashing games spread over two or 3 channels

  • Pity about all the loss in the forwards. My question is when is Kobus Reinach going to get a call to Superugby? And when will Dwayne Kelly get a call to VC? Sharks lost because Plum doesn’t rotate.

  • How about starting a Vodacom Cup Fantasy League for next year? It will get us to become more interested in the ‘other’ guys and get to know the players a bit better.

I think it is a good idea, but the admin around it is near impossible..

We don’t even get to see a SWD team announcement as their union doesn’t know about this thing called the interweb…

    Good idea though..
