Dawie Theron has asked Bulls flanker Wian Liebenberg to lead a strong SA Under 20 side at this year’s IRB Junior Wolrd Chamionship in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.

Super Rugby players in Johan Goosen, Steven Kitshoff and Paul Jordaan have been included, along with the Lions’ Paul Willemse and Sharks Pieter-Steph du Toit, both of whom have been exposed to this year’s competition in a small way.

The Sharks are well represented, with props Allan Dell and Maks van Dyk, and loose forwards Khaya Majola and Braam Steyn all making the cut alongside Jordaan and du Toit.

There’s also been a frankly shock inclusion for young Ollie Kebble, son of former Sharks and Bok prop Guy. Kebble, who has been in France for the last year or so, played a Vodacom Cup trial match for the Sharks earlier in the year, before signing a contract with Western Province.

The full South Africa Under-20 squad for the Junior World Championship:

Surname Name Position Provincial Union
Leyds Dillyn Fullback Western Province
Schmidt Marais Fullback Golden Lions
Ismaiel Travis Wing Blue Bulls
Jordaan Paul Wing Kwazulu-Natal

Willemse Paul Lock Golden Lions
Dell Allan Prop KwaZulu-Natal
Kebble Oliver Prop Western Province
Kitshoff Steven Prop Western Province
Van Dyk Nicolaas Prop KwaZulu-Natal
Pretorius Mark Hooker Golden Lions
Thomas Jason Hooker Blue Bulls

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 1) : Great squad, can’t see how we will lose. We need to Win, our junior rugby should be by a long run the Best in the world.

I mean Jordaan, Mbovane, Serfontein, Goosen, Luiters, Du Toit, Willemse, Dell and Kitshoff…great youngsters, will all play international rugby one day for sure. Luiters will probably end up in the Blitzbokke side.

Grey College monster tighthead Prop  Neethling Fouche is unlucky.
Xander fought hard for him to make the trials.
He impressed but Oom Dawie went for the more experienced Oliver Kebble.

EP’s Muir College can be proud of Jaso Thomas at Hooker he has a massive future.

The Sharks did not really rate Shaun Adendorff Hans Scriba signed up Guy Alexander,Majola and Braam Steyn. ;-)
The Bulls had to fight for his signature i’m so happy for him he has improved alot at the Bulls set up.

Remember what i said about the ex Glenwood players Jacques Taylor,Ferdi Horn,Dean Moolman at the Bulls watch them make the Baby Boks training Squad this year.

Xander started scouting with Meyer 4 years ago.He has worked so damn hard to secure the best talent for Bulls rugby.

I do not want to say too much but i already know which players we have signed up from KZN this year.

Having 9 baby boks in Pretoria does not automatically translate into silverware, but if it makes you happy, then cool.

It seems that Ruan Venter isn’t 100% yet or i would have expected him to be in the group.
lions juniors are going to be spoilt for choice at lock this year and in 2013 with Ruan Botha, Paul Willemse, Venter and Oosthuizen competing.

That is true, though I dont think that many of them will stay in the Junior side though. From what I have seen and heard Willemse will play in the CC as the 4 and might even be there if Roodt doesnt step up going forward in Superugby. As for Botha he will probably play a part off the bench in Superugby perhaps and is looking like he will tour to NZ/Aus, and I would imagine he will play a large part in CC as well. I think Oosthuizen may have to play at flank going forward. There is a lot of talent there and will be interested to see how it works out going forward.

  • If Willemse is to become 1st choice,a lot of lineout work required,Ruan Botha not the biggest, but I really don’t see Franco van der Merwe finishing 2013 as 1st choice no.5 if Botha keeps developing so well. Big fan of Venter, but think he might be behind Willemse in the pecking order now

  • @slammerboy (Comment 22) :

I think that is where they see his future position. Im not sure what his height is, at times it is quoted as 1.98 and others 194 – and his weight seems to fluctuate as well. I think it is 194-5 that is more accurate. He went on at flank for the Lions against the Cheetahs in the Superrugby game so that would indicate his future lies there and that is where they see him playing.

  • @Ludz (Comment 25) :

In the Lions v Cheetahs game Willemse took a few lineout balls so he can jump at 2 lock which bodes well. Certainly does need to develop that aspect but his physicaliy for such a young guy is incredibly impressive – I have never seen Ashley Johnson stopped in his tracks like that before. As for Botha at 2.04 he obviously has the height but I’m sure they will get him to fill out this year, as the conditioning staff are pretty good up at the Lions. Certainly playing off the bench will be good for him.

  • Sergio Peterson has electric pace, wonderful player on the counter attack. If the Bulls were to sign Sergio, they certainly wouldn’t need the other Kriel at fullback, someone asked if there was a player who could keep Sergio out of the SA Schools no.15,but from what I’ve heard this young Kriel could do just that, can you tell me their names quickly, forgotten their names. So I assume Ryno Eksteen (Affies flyhalf) will be leaving the Bulls next year if they are looking at signing both Josh and van der Walt

Ruan Botha will get opportunities, that much I am sure of,so the Lions will do well to hold onto him

  • @ Slammerboy,Grasshopper and Ludz some schoolboy rugby transfer news

When i spoke to Xander he said they are already in talks with Sergeal Petersen this week.

Yes Carl Swart was signed by the Bulls already last year.
Daniel And Jesse Kriel have also been signed up by the Bulls.
    It’s no yet confirmed.

Bulls supporters better prepare for some good news soon concerning Gimmies pivot Handre Pollard.
All i will say is we are fighting for his signature he is brilliant.
Most scouts say he is the next big thing after goosen.

Affies 2.02 metre lock Janse Van Rensburg and 2.04 Metre lock RG Snyman still 17 years old   are staying with the Bulls.Affies Captain and the SA schools prop Pierre Schoeman is also a Bulls player.

The Sharks and Bulls are after Malcolm Marx. But the problem is that he has a Lions junior contract.Xander will only sign him if he really wants to play for the Bulls. He will have to play hooker or prop. ;-)

Want to reveal more but so far that’s all i can say.Made a promise to werner concerning the other signings.

Is Vd Walt going to the Bulls, because if they get Stander, Pollard and Vd Walt they will have three flyhalves which seems crazy?

It’s his decision Xander did not force jaco to join the Bulls.
There is a good reason why Stoney and Burger decided to leave the lions.
Xander and Werner are following the rules concerning player recruitment.
Both of them have said that alot of players approach the bulls because they want to join the set up.
Bulls spend alot of money in the high performance set up.
We are attracting schoolboy talent because we have one of the best structures in the country.
Yes not everyone will make it but at the end of the day the players and parents are the one’s who make the decisions.

True Brummer’s group had some talented players BUT the Bulls already knew they were never going to make the step up. ;-)

The Dippernaars and Watermeyers were good enough as back up players.Short term solutions.

When Meyer came back to the Bulls he changed the whole recruitment system.

It was simple a better budget,a much improved deeper scouting system ,and only two scouts. We now only look at the top 4 players in each position.

Oom Meyer was scouting for the Bulls he idendifield players like Pieter Steph Du Toit,Jacques Du Plessis,William Small Smith as potential boks in the future.

That is why i’m confident players like Francois Venter,Arno Botha,Serfontein ect will make the step up Meyer has already watched them 5 years ago. They are better than Eric Sauls rejects.

  • Also miss beet on here, but I still ge to see his posts on 365 and it’s schoolboy season,so I guess he’s quite occupied on that side of things,if sharksworld had a bit more schoolboy rugby, you’d see the value of beet to schoolboy rugby, particularly KZN schoolboy rugby, where so many future Sharks will come.

I have to be honest don’t think it will do any of the boys good if they are all from the same age group and play the same position ie Josh Stander,Handre Pollard,Jaco vd Walt,Province have expressed interest in Josh before, but they wanted him to move schools, which he wasn’t keen to do,a respectable trait of any young man. If that were to be the case that the Bulls wanted all 3,then I’d rather he move to Province if they were still interested,I’ll always back Josh against challengers,so it’s not so much so the competitive environment, but rather the kind of message these young lads are getting, the unions should be about rather confidently backing this young lads and making sure they’re comfortable with the vision the unions forsee for them, look it’s understandable that the union must have precautions players can get easily injured ie Dries Swanepoel. Really now 3 schoolboy flyhalves?

Josh Stander and Jaco vd Walt are the one’s who want to come to the Bulls. If they have second thought then they can go to the Lions,Sharks or WP.
Xander did not point a gun at them and forced them to sign.
You guys should be blaming their parents the Bulls scouts did their jobs and that’s to approach players who are keen on wearing the blue jersey.

Lets’s not get ahead ourselves concerning Pollard it’s not confirmed.

If the Bull do sign all 3 flyhalves..Pollard will play seniOR rugby soon,Josh Bulls Under 19 rugby..Jaco will used as a utility back just like Burger Odendaal.
Bulls have a plan that’s to create a team union full of world class talent not mediocre players.
We want to be the best.

  • @Megatron (Comment 46) : Eric sauls tenure as SA U20 coach was characterised by average performance and poor (some would say Bulls biased) selections.
Most of the names you mentioned should never have been there in the first place.
The 2009 side to Japan was a good example. The Bulls had the highest representation in that squad despite not even making the semis’s in the U19 CC in 2008 (won by the Sharks).
he totally ignored Pat Lambie who had been the SA Schools fullback in 2007 and 2008 and went on to have an outstanding season for the Sharks u21 side that year.
I guess thats why so many of them havent stepped up.

  • Exactly what I mean, what does that say to Josh and Jaco,if it’s already being said that Pollard will play senior rugby ahead of both of them. Look I know Josh is a competitor and mentally very strong,so he’ll take everything in his stride and he’ll want to prove that he’s got what it takes, but other players like Jaco could be mentally crushed don’t know him too well, just saying that it could be like that,it’s not good for young players to be in such competitive environments particurlarly while they learn the ins and outs of being pro sportsmen,am a Bulls fan,but some of their recruitment methods are just not appropriate for youngsters, for instance it’s said that Cheetahs u19 group this year isn’t of more than 35 players, reckon that’s good at the level these boys are,not a squad of 60 players

It might also change with the length of superugby as well. As we have seen already depth is a non-negotiable which means that talented youngsters that have the aptitude to play at a higher level quite quickly will get opportunities. We have already seen the benefits of Goosen’s decision to stay at Free State rather than go to the Bulls and PS Du Toit and even to some extent Paul Jordaan whilst Willemse would have played a lot more if he was not injured. In essence if some of these youngsters hang around smaller franchises with less of a junior playing pool they may get opportunities a lot quicker.

  • Most of the major unions only contract about 20-25 U19 players each year. These groups are supplemented by players who recieve bursarys from associated universitys like Stellenbosch, UJ, Shimlas and Tuks. I dont see how any union can sustain contracting 60 players a year at this level – at least 30 of them wont be playing.
This was one of the things that contributed to financial strain at the Lions – way too many contracted players who werent good enough and/or werent playing.

but now suddenly the story has changed and it is now Heyneke who ACTUALLY scouted these brilliant youngster, so i guess the “special mention” should be going to him because we KNOW how kak Sauls was with the Baby Boks and how kak the players he’s had at the Blue Bulls academy have been.

Firstly why live in Pretoria when you can say in Cape Town and secondly WP actually doesn’t have huge depth at 10 so he has a chance to do well in this position for the union.

  • England U20 squad has been named for the JWC

Players to keep an eye on include:-

Matt Kvesic – Worcester Warriors No.8 – 1.86m, 104kg – this lad has plenty of Aviva Premiership experience
David Sisi – London Irish – Flank – 1.93m, 120kg – played a few games in the AP this season
    Jamie Elliott – Northampton Saints – centre/wing 1.80m, 88kg – been a first team regular this season
Ben Spencer – Saracens -scrumhalf – 1.83m, 85kg – been part of the 1st team this season and started when de Kock was injured
Marland Yarde – London Irish – wing – 1.85m, 88kg – lots and pace and power. Will be a key player for Irish in seasons to come

Elliot Daly the star London Wasps centre is not included in the squad either because of injury or because he may be a bolter in the England squad to tour SA in June

He is being replaced by Wasps No 8 Billy Vunipola who made his debut for Wasps when he was still at school. In my opinion this is a bonus for SA as Vunipola looks unconditioned. He is a unit clocking 126kgs. He played in the England U18 team against whom Paul Jordaan scored that memorable try.
