The second game of the weekend, and the first Friday night game in a while, has the Lions hosting the Brumbies, who are fresh off a good performance against the Bulls last weekend. The Lions, coming off a bye, will be hoping to hit some form as the second half of the season gets underway.

The Lions have continued with Jaco Taute in the midfield as youngster Andries Coetzee continues at fullback. Maties rookie Grant Hattingh will make his debut from the bench should he be used, as the Lions continue to struggle in the line-outs.

The Brumbies outscored the Bulls five tries to two last weekend, picking up two bonus points at fortress Loftus, and will be aiming to pick up at least another four points this weekend. Jake White, having previously been involved at the Lions, will make it a personal matter to do well.

Lions: 15. Andries Coetzee, 14. Deon van Rensburg, 13. Jaco Taute, 12. Alwyn Hollenbach, 11. Lionel Mapoe, 10. Elton Jantjies, 9. Tian Meyer, 8. Joshua Strauss (Captain), 7. Derick Minnie, 6. Cobus Grobbelaar, 5. Franco van der Merwe, 4. Hendrik Roodt, 3. Pat Cilliers, 2. Callie Visagie, 1. Caylib Oosthuizen

Replacements: 16. Martin Bezuidenhout, 17. Jacobie Adriaanse, 18. Grant Hattingh, 19. Christo le Roux, 20. Ross Cronje, 21. Butch James, 22. Michael Killian

Brumbies: 15. Jesse Mogg, 14. Henry Speight, 13. Andrew Smith, 12. Pat McCabe, 11. Joseph Tomane, 10. Christian Lealiifano, 9. Nic White, 8. Fotu Auelua, 7. Michael Hooper, 6. Peter Kimlin, 5. Leon Power, 4. Scott Fardy, 3. Ben Alexander, 2. Stephen Moore (Captain), 1. Ruaidhri Murphy

Replacements: 16. Anthony Hegarty, 17. Scott Sio, 18. Sam Carter, 19. Ita Vaea, 20. Ian Prior, 21. Robbie Coleman, 22. Tevita Kuridrani

At this point I’d still back the worst of SA to beat the best of Aus. So I’m backing the Lions to snatch this one.

    4 picks for the Brumbies (I’m one :) )

    1 player eliminated.

    175 teams entered the game:
9 still alive with a lifeline.
23 still alive with no lifeline.
    143 out of the game.

  • @csb (Comment 61) : think you missing what makes a coach a great one. Jake knows his weakness and is not too proud to get help from people that know better. In our case, our man is the head coach, forwards coach, attack coach, defense coach and mental coach. No wonder our guys are a bunch of headless chickens on the field.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 82) :

I’d like to think I have an idea what makes a good coach and one of those things are to surround yourself with the correct people to obtain consitent success.

Jake has proven this with the Boks and now the Brumbies…my point was that you can see the Larkam and Gregan effect in this team and good on Jake for securing their services.

I thought Sharks had a forwards and backs coach ..?

  • @csb. It’s easy to become one, hard as hell to be one! Lions and Cheetahs have it easy, no-one expects them to win every game, rather the opposite actually, the Sharks on the other hand are a team full of world class stars, yet we can not seem to play to that potential. The last Sharks game I thoroughly enjoyed was the 2010 CC final, not for winning the trophy, but for the type of rugby they played. All downhill since then

  • @csb (Comment 83) : To be honest, I think Plum want’s a bunch of yes men in his coaching staff. @csb (Comment 87) : Wasn’t Fisher fired at some stage…? Jake clearly knows how to be a head coach, his coaching team clearly compliments each other.
