The best games did not involve the South African teams this week. The Stormers again delivered a competent performance in taking a victory from the lowly Western Force, but also again could not complete their victory with a bonus point, they are yet to score four tries in a game this year, not that this would bother them too much. The Lions was just poor, their performance showed no evidence of the team that lifted the Currie Cup trophy last year and the Cheetahs, well, they’ve always been their own worst enemy, this weekend more so than any other. You just can’t throw away a game after leading by 21 points.

I will again be using stats for the few positions where our selections weren’t conclusive. This weeks team is basically split between the Stormers and the Cheetahs, with the stats squeaking in one Lions players.

15. Andries Coetzee *

(Stats used to select player)

The voting was split and so Andries gets selected based on stats taken from (Verusco, RugbyStats, FoxSports and TestRugby.com) Not only was he heavily involved in this game, but for most of this game he looked sleek and confident, he made one terrible mistake, but mostly looks a class act and another youngster with a bright future.

14. Willie le Roux (4)

I think it is safe to say that he is not just a flash in the pan. He was again used as one of the main distributors in the team, taking the ball from first receiver and in the midfield quite a few times. He made just as many passes as Johan Goosen, just to prove my point.

13. Bryan Habana (2) and (3) at 11

(stats used to select player)

The try that was awarded to him late in the first half was a turning point in the game. The teams were deadlocked and neither team played inspiring rugby. Habana is looking fresh and sharp, it’s good to see him finding his form again.

12. Andries Strauss *

Strauss has been hampered by injuries since his move back to the Cheetahs, he has taken a while to get back to his usual abrasive self, but in this game he was not only strong and heavily involved on attack, but stayed solid on defence when his team fell apart in this area in the last 20 minutes of the game.

11. Danie Poolman *

With a few injuries and a few teams not taking part this weekend, there really was no standouts in this position, or even some of the other positions, but Poolman had a solid game and doing what he did well was good enough to make the team this time.

10. Peter Grant (2)

(stats used to select player)

Only his second selection in our team and only just over young Goosen, who again looked explosive and confident, to bad he got replaced. I looked at the stats for this one and Grant’s overall statistical (not emotional) influence on the game, was greater.

9. Dewaldt Duvenage (3)

I was tempted to pick Ross Cronje here, he looked really good and made quite an impact when he came on for the Lions, but he was erratic and made a few too many errors. Duvenage was nothing more than solid, making clean passes and quick decisions, which if you really think about it is just about all you need from a scrumy.

8. Nizaam Carr *

He was called on to cover for last week’s captain and impressed. A well deserved first cap in our team as well as his first Super Rugby cap. Another young player stepping up.

7. Rynhardt Elstadt *

(stats used to select player)

He pipped Minnie too the post, the stats showed that in a strong defensive team he played his role, with a try as an added bonus.

6. Heinrich Brussow (2)

He has not been quite so prominent as a pilfer, but he has been influential as a ball carrier, a link and a leader in this team.

5. Andries Bekker (4)

His stature in this team has been backed by his performances. When you build a name like he has and like a few other players has, almost just your name on the team sheet effects the teams performance.

4. Andries Ferreira *

One of six first-timers in this team and amazingly the 4th Andries, completely by coincidence, I promise. He stepped up as a confident ball carrier and got his team on the front foot for good ball on attack.

3. WP Nel (4)

Again part of a strong scrum and good set piece ball, he also seems like one of the front rowers who quietly gets through a lot of work.

2. Adriaan Strauss (4)

Does a captain take some of the blame for a loss like his team’s? His individual game was again a standout, but one wonders if greater captains could have inspired greater resolve, or in fact simply have been able to get his team together to stop the bleeding, instead they were rattled as a team and clearly as individuals and came out with a heartbreaking loss.

1. Coenie Oosthuizen (2)

When he is at his best, his scrummaging is strong, he loves carrying the ball and busts over the line, he even gets into the rucks and slows the ball down for the opposition.

  • Good team, but some thoughts:

Joe Pietersen had an immense game in the wet for the Stormers, so he was unlucky not to get the nod.

Goosen also had a big game, but I agree with the Grant selection, he has had some strong performances over the last few weeks. Do not be surprised if Grant makes the Bok team later this year.

I thought Kolisi had a huge game for the Stormers, again unlucky not to crack the nod, especially since the other two teams lost badly..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I actually thought Joe had a below par day against the Force, that was my opinion, this is way we need more selectors contributing each week.

  • @Letgo (Comment 2) :

I was on holiday, only really watched the Stormers game in full.

The other two, I had to do with the hour long highlights last night.

  • Yup, Willie le Roux is awesome. Still needs to work hard on his defense though.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : Got it.

The Cheetahs game was really good for the Cheetahs until 60min into the game. So if the players I selected continued tackling well, it didn’t effect their selection for me personally.
