Grant recommits (half his time) to Stormers

Peter Grant has today extended his Stormers contract for another year, although he will again only play for them in next year’s Super Rugby competition after completing his commitments to the Kobe Steelers.

According to various sources, the former Maritzburg College flyhalf has put pen to paper in a new deal for 2013 that will extend his existing arrangement, which sees him turn out for the Stormers in Super Rugby, while playing out the Currie Cup season in Japan with the Steelers.

In previous years, the Stormers have endured somewhat of a frustrating time, never quite knowing when Grant will become available to them as players in Japan tend to play through the start of the Super Rugby competition up until their respective clubs get knocked out of the Japanese league competition. Clearly this minor annoyance hasn’t prevented them from continuing in the same vein for another year.

  • A real pain in the backside, especially as it doesn’t give us much momentum following on from the Currie Cup…

but it does give us time to find a good flyhalf. At the moment, outside of Grant, we don’t have that. Gary van Aswegen didn’t cut it, and the rest are much further behind.

Can only hope we can nab one from elsewhere, or Timo Swiel turns out to be the answer there.

  • I really think that Grant stands a chance to be involved in the Springbok setup..

Does this mean he will not be involved with that? Or will his participation be limited to the English tests?

  • @hendrikp (Comment 1) : Last year reams were written about the chances all the 10s were getting and how it would stand the union in good stead in future.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 1) : Sias should really reconsider this package deal thing he has going with Robert. He could really advance himself at the Stormers instead of playing second fiddle to Goosen for (possibly?) the next few years in the prime of his playing career.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 2) :

He wouldn’t be a part of it anyway. Not going to make it as a kicker, and you can be sure that one of the first things Heyneke would be looking at for his 10′s is tactical kicking.

    @Salmonoid (Comment 3) :

Don’t tell me. I’m no fan of Catrakilis or Coleman – see Coleman had a good game at 15 over the weekend though. Had higher hopes for Gary van Aswegen, but in hindsight he looks way out of his depth.

Both signed on until the end of 2013 I believe… Goosen contracted until the end of 2014.

I’m not so sure he’d fit in with the Stormers defensive systems. Ideally he’d have waited until Goosen moved on – which he will do eventually for more money – but now he’ll have to reconsider his options towards the end of next year. The way he’s talking you’d think he’s a near sure thing to go elsewhere, maybe even to come sit on the bench at the Sharks. That or Lambie goes back to 15, who knows!

*Not going to make it as a “centre” I meant.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 5) : van Aswegen showed some promise last year, sadly this year he seems short on game time. I know he has a very high regard for Pieter Louw and maybe with him out of WP rugby, Gary is feeling a bit down / in need of a mentor.

I think you suffer from the illness called ‘Muzi syndrome’

The symptoms include rating any age group player as a future star even though he hasn’t done anything to deserve said status.

For your reference please refer to any school boy player that has represented the Bulls at age group level.
