The Lions have suffered yet another injury set back with news that Alwyn Hollenbach is returning to South Africa following a knee injury, while coach John Mitchell has been forced to name a changed side to face the Blues this weekend.

The loss of Hollenbach has resulted in a backline shuffle, with Jaco Taute moving even closer to the action in 12, while Lionel Mapoe joins him in midfield. Michael Killian comes into the starting line up on the wing, while Ruan Combrinck comes onto the bench.

The forward pack is left unchanged following a good showing against the Chiefs, with Grant Hattingh looking especially good on the flank, as well as doubling as a line out option.

Hollenbach’s place in the tour group is taken by Anthony Volmink, who is on his way to join the team in New Zealand.

Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee,14 Deon Van Rensburg,13 Lionel Mapoe,12 Jaco Taute,11 Michael Killian,10 Elton Jantjies,9 Ross Cronje,8 Joshua Strauss (c),7 Grant Hattingh,6 Derick Minnie,5 Ruan Botha,4 Franco Van der Merwe,3 Patric Cilliers,2 Callie Visagie,1 JC Janse van Rensburg

Reserves: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout,17 CJ Van der Linde,18 Cobus Grobbelaar,19 Jaco Kriel,20 Tian Meyer,21 Ruan Combrinck,22 James Kamana

  • Lets be honest here, that is a Vodacom cup side… Other than Taute, Jantjies and Strauss and perhaps Cilliers and Mapoe (pre-injury) at a stretch, the players just aren’t Super15 quality.

  • Hattingh is a solid player, would like to see him gain 5-8kg of muscle mass. He could be a real top class threat from 8th man.

    Chuffed Ruuaaannn is on the bench.

  • @The Quirk (Comment 1) : Ja pretty average side indeed, i’m keen to see the Cats back next year. Most of the team will be Cheetahs players; but at least Lions supporters will have a lot more opportunities to celebrate a victory. :smile:

  • @The Quirk (Comment 1) : I would add Andries Coetzee and Pat Cilliers to your list of S15 players though

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 4) : Cilliers is there… I’m still undecided about Coetzee but he does look a good prospect.

  • @The Quirk (Comment 6) : I just can’t see the Cats working again. Most likely the better Lions players will be drafted to the Kings – because where else will the Kings find S15 quality players next year?

  • @The Quirk (Comment 5) : and Michael Rhodes?

    Think Caylib Oosthuizen is one for the future likewise the locks Ruan Botha and Paul Willemse. These guys will be cherry picked.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 7) : I guess we wait and see, it’s still quite possible that SARU will backtrack and the whole Kings saga will be buried under a carpet of promises for another five years.

    @Bokhoring (Comment 10) :

    The Kings won’t feature next year..

    A contract is a contract, signed and sealed, whereas the Kings are living in hope of a promise..

    Next year we will see the five franchises as we see them today, and the Kings will still struggle into the Vodacom Cup quarters, and play B division Currie Cup..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 11) : What are the legal rights of the current franchises? Are they contractually protected against relegation?

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 12) :

    They do not have any relegation clauses due to non-performance, which prohibits any of the current teams from being dropped from the competition.

    There is also the small matter of sponsorship deals that have been signed on the basis that these franchises take part in Super Rugby until 2015.

    Basically, not one of the current franchises can legally be dropped/relegated as such, without someone (be it SARU or somehow the Kings themselves) buys them out of the contract.

  • @The Quirk (Comment 6) :

    i cant see how anybody could think this is a good idea ..

    1 team = one revenue != 2 unions .

    and taking the reason for failure as encouragement to do it again is also no a good idea … .

    yes both unions are broke … but why ? because they had to share the revenue for so long …

  • @Zibbie (Comment 14) :

    I agree with you on this ..

    The joint Franchise idea just simply does not work, it didn’t work for the Cats back then, it is not even currently working in the lessor state, where the smaller Unions are bunched with the bigger Unions, ie Boland with the Stormers.

    The smaller Unions are just feeder systems for the bigger unions anyway, this will not change until more money is put into the smaller unions, and those are better managed.

    Even the better Griquas players are moving to the other Unions, and they have a reasonably strong setup and Currie Cup team!

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 13) : Morne actually has an article on his website about the Kings not being automatic choices for next year – specifically mentioning the litigation issues.

    SARU seems to be stuck between a rock and a hard place.

    SARU put themsleves in that position, by offering the cheese before the cow has coughed up the milk..

    I feel nothing or those idiots who have turned every thread on this site into a dispute about the Kings..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 15) :

    I would rather have the Lions go play in Europe then having the cats play in SR .

    Both unions will also loose players since you cant keep 2 star players happy

    What do you do for example with Elton on form and an injury free Goosen ?

    or they thought it would just never happen .. so far so good on this one :mrgreen:

    They didn’t think it through, as simple as that.

    Why do you think they keep harrassing SANZAR to make it 16 teams next year, they KNOW that they cannot just drop any of the current frnachises.

    @Zibbie (Comment 20) :

    The thing is, these things need to be discussed..

    It’s something that might or might not happen (In my mind the Kings have no chance, it simply cannot happen) , but we do not hear anything official happening.

    Surely if something is to happen next year, the Kings need to be given as much time as possible to recruit, and players will also need some form of contractual guarantee before making a move to the Kings..

    It’s just too much to change in one single year, especially since nothing is official as yet, and won’t be official for some time to come..

    I have a solution that I will put into an article, but it would have to mean all the nations will have to buy into it, something that we know the Aussies won’t especially like doing.

    True . But you know how we in Africa are . we think if we avoid something long enough it will just go away . then we are very surprised when it doent .. Then we blame something else .

    i think the big problem is the Ozzies dont have a competition like we have the CC and NZL have the ITM cup . I wonder why nobody ever tried to get a few Ozzie teams into the ITM cup .

    then we can go back to the old super 12 and not have to watch all those boring ozzie derbies over and over again ….
