Sharks “can’t afford Steyn”… but is this just a ruse?

Many of us have been growing concerned – if not outright alarmed – at the lack of progress in the Sharks attempts to re-sign Francois Steyn.

To briefly catch up on the timeline of events here, various sources confirmed back in March that Steyn was “in talks” with the Sharks regarding a possible return at the end of the French season, a move that would see him available to play in their last two Super Rugby games this year. Mike Greenaway of the Mercury quoted Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl as saying that he had met with Steyn and his agent “recently”, adding that “we have had productive discussions, but nothing has been finalised because of the issue of a possible contract with SA Rugby that would need to be part of the process of him returning to SA. Hopefully everything will be sorted out, and if that is the case he would be able to play for us after the French season ends in June. The key thing is that all parties want Francois to return to SA.”

The expectation that the signing would be confirmed within weeks of that story, though, came to nought, but appeared to become more likely when, in April, it was confirmed that Steyn had turned down a lucrative contract extension from Racing Metro and would indeed return to South Africa. That was almost a month ago now, though and still no Sharks contract has been confirmed.

It was, then, a little surprising to read in the Witness late on Friday that the Sharks, according to another direct quote from van Zyl “couldn’t afford Steyn”, with the CEO appearing to go back on what he said earlier in adding that they hadn’t heard from Steyn at all since last year and “didn’t know what his plans were”. According to that piece, by John Bishop, none of the South African Super Rugby franchises were able to meet Steyn’s wage demands and the onus would thus fall on the national body to top up his earnings with a Bok contract; this, apparently, was to be discussed and hopefully finalised at a meeting to be held on Thursday this week.

Having spoken to a number of parties, though, my feeling is that van Zyl is again playing games here. Sources close to both the Sharks and the Boks remain convinced that Steyn is returning to Durban, with one even suggesting that a deal has already been done with SARU to make this happen. We’ll let the Sharks play their usual cloak and dagger media game, since it seems to make them happy to do so, but if any fans are now worried that the Steyn signing isn’t going to happen at all, I would advise against undue concern.

More on this, as ever, once we have something concrete.

  • It would be fairly stupid for Van Zyl to play games here.

Especially given the fact that there is already unhappiness between Bok players, their unions and SA Rugby wrt money issues.

Perhaps that is the hold up? The money issues with Bok players?

  • @Morné (Comment 1) : Agreed.

Steyn`s return has been the only light in our dark tunnel of a season so far.

If they fumble this or start playing mind games again we`re not gonna be happy . . .

  • Rob wasn’t this the same thing that was happening when John Smit was coming back, Sharks saying that they couldn’t afford John and that they didn’t whant to risk losing Bissie, and that SARU would sort out where John would play? It all seems like deja vu. But why play these games, what does it benefit the Union if they already have his signature?

Another horrible investment by the Sharks in terms of player resources – I haven’t seen him take the field once in any of our matches

That means that great Canadian Stormer will not be allowed to play in the playoff if there are any more great injuries to rule out the other loosies down there.

Where will steyn play? Either Whitehead or Ludik will have to drop out of the XV. Maybe Whitehead…and Bosman drops out thank goodness. Whitehead off the bench could be very effective.

Lambie/Steyn/Jordaan combo…3 crazy talented stars playing together…could be very awesome!!

I hear he comes with baggage and can be a little prima donnaish.

And where are we going to play him? 12 or 15?

Would be a trajedy if he displaced Whitehead.

Personally, I am not the greatest fan of the Steyn..

He plays really well, and there is no denying the man has talent, and vision, but he just lacks the personality and the team-aspect that I admire in a player..

I will back him fully should he come to Durban, but I would prefer him going elsewhere..

I think he can only be a further disruption to our already unbalanced team.

  • Should we not give a guy the benefit of the doubt? We make assumptions without knowing the guy. Its so easy for confidence to be seen as arrogance. I am not saying that I am correct, I could be totally off the mark here. But the fact that I do not like a players looks or “attitude” (or what I think it is), should not really be a deciding factor of wether he is should be signed. Also, we all make mistakes, and if I was not given second chances in life, I don’t know where I’d be – I don’t know about you guys. Surely he deserves the same?

If it turns out that nothing has changed, then, by all means, slag di ou!

Clearly you are entirely objective when it comes to Steyn.

Whitehead and Lambie have without doubt been the best Shark backline players and I for one dont think that Frans would walk into this Sharks side. At 15 yes, but centre…perhaps not. If he did play 12, Whitehead would play 13.

I think its been proven now once and for all that JP is not a 13. Wasnt bad but 14 is his position.

I have never made any bones about my support for Fransie, or Pat or JP or even Riaan Viljoen (see what bad coaching can do!)…just the virality of your attack against Frans and the punting of Whitehead left a question to be asked (and not answered)…

Lambie and Whitehead have been great this year – I have no problem with Tim. Steyn is better though – and IMO i think JP will be better at 13 if he is allowed the chance.

I have no relationship with Whitehead. I think he is a great player and has been a revelation at 12 for the Sharks.

I just think we need to calm down a bit on the Frans hype. He sometimes is a bit full of himself.
Look at how the Hurricanes are now performing after getting rid of Weepu and Nonu etc who, by all accounts, were a hugely disruptive force with the Canes which has followed them to the Blues.

If he does come to the Sharks, he needs to prove himself here again, make sure he has the right attitutude if hes unconditioned etc etc. I am of the opinion that if he came back to Durban, he would battle to walk into the centre position simply because of the way TW has been playing.
And if he did, TW would shift to 13.
Jp had 6 games starting at 13, more than enough time to grow into the position. Doesnt have the necessary skill set for a great 13.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 134) : I didn’t defend Marius Joubert because he is/ should be our 6th choice centre. I was saying that we should back Whitehead and Jordaan – they’re CURRENT aren’t they?

See it as defensive or not, I made the stupid comment about driving a player into the sea (and yes, it was your beloved Marius Joubert) and will cop to it. I saw it as a metaphor to get Marius Joubert to leave the Sharks because I don’t see his value in the setup. Do I regret making the remark? Of course.

That is my opinion. I would rather have other players like Whitehead, Jordaan, Mjekevu, Williams or even Zeilinga out of position in our squad as they are our future and add more benefit in future years.

Did I rate MJ in previous years? Yes, but I think that his form has really dipped and that our other younger players are better than him (even without his experience) and deserve a position instead of him.

What more do you want to know?

  • Just to confirm . The rules has changed . No player who was registered after 1 April is allowed to play in the playoff’s . Only the 35 players registered by the union on that date is allowed to play in the playoff’s .

  • @Zibbie (Comment 141) : That rule could surely hurt the Stormers, they’ve lost so many loosies these last few weeks surely they must be looking for players way outside their original 35 by now?

  • Whitehead is solid and dependable and has grown significantly this past year… however, are we saying he is the best inside centre in the country at the moment? Better than DeVilliers even?

Cos imo Frans Steyn is better than DeVilliers… he proved that at last year’s WC. Where despite not having had Superugby exposure and everyone having the same debate as they are now that he’ll be undercooked, he proved in a very short space of time at the WC that he should be our 1st choice Centre, and was heading that way until injury cut his WC short.

So unless we are saying that Whitehead is better than DeVilliers, then sorry for him, Steyn is better and he deserves the 12 jersey. Of course he’ll have to prove he deserves his place, no coach worth his weight would surely allow it any other way (well… having said that  ).

Whitehead is good, as was Barrit, but neither are good enough imo.

To say it’s unfair on Whitehead is crazy… if Whitehead’s the best then there’s no argument, otherwise “sorry for him”

I feel many a player could take a leaf out of Hougaard’s book. He was blocked by one of the best 9′s ever, and instead of feeling sorry for himself he used his immense talent to show that he can also be one of our best wings too! Now there’s a player with the right attitude!

  • PS: If he had the right coach, like a Nick Mallet (or even John Mitchell – bearing in mind he’ll be without a job next year when the Lions are relegated), then Steyn’s alleged “ego” would never be allowed to be a problem

  • @CS (Comment 144) : frans steyn played against fiji, samoa…against wales’ jamie roberts he wasn’t so flash. they early try he scored was from fullback before jdv was injured. even wynand would look good against fiji, samoa, tonga, argentina, and the england team we beat 36 – 0.
