Botes benched for 100th game

The old adage about not changing a winning team seems not to have reached Durban, with coach John Plumtree opting to make a number of changes to his side for this weekend’s clash against the Stormers.

Changes to the loose trio see Marcell Coetzee shifted to openside flank to make space for big Willem Alberts at blind; with Keegan Daniel continuing at number 8 (behind an unchanged tight five), Jacques Botes drops to the bench and will make his 100th Super Rugby appearance for the team if he get on in the second half.

It’s amongst the backs, though, where the more interesting changes have been made. Fred Michalak hangs on to the flyhalf jersey, after a good performance against the Cheetahs last week, meaning a return at fullback for Pat Lambie. Riaan Viljoen has again dropped right our of the 22, while a further change at inside centre sees Meyer Bosman start in place of Tim Whitehead, whose tight groin has ruled him out of action this week.

Looking at the bench, flank Jean Deysel is strangely absent, with Pieter-Steph du Toit back in contention as the reserve lock, meaning only two loose forwards (in Botes and Ryan Kankowski) amongst the replacements. Louis Ludik also returns to the side, after missing out last week and he joins Odwa Ndungane as one of only two back line reserves.

The Sharks

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Anton Bresler
6. Marcell Coetzee
7. Willem Alberts
8. Keegan Daniel (Captain)
9. Charl McLeod
10. Frederic Michalak
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Paul Jordaan
14. JP Pietersen
15. Patrick Lambie

Replacement
16. Craig Burden
17. Wiehahn Herbst
18. Pieter-Steph du Toit
19. Ryan Kankowski
20. Jacques Botes
21. Odwa Ndungane
22. Louis Ludik

  • He’s planning to crush their forwards with crash balls. He usually tries this tactic in tight games, and it does not really work. Stupid to drop Botes. Where is Deysel?

  • if we’d gone with Pat at 10, Louis at 15 and the same loose trio that has played the last 3 weeks, I’d back us to win by 10.

I just can’t see all these new combos gelling in time.

  • As good as Fred was last week, he usually can’t keep that up for 2 games in a row. When you have the option to have two calm and collected players in your 15 in such a crunch match, why put one of them on the bench.

Perhaps the plan with Botes is to counteract Fourie (the only real ball spoiler in the Stormers) in the second half. Unfortunately he is also our only loosie that has any idea of protecting our ball at rucks

I can see the Stormers forwards and Grant running at Bosman and Fred all day long

  • This will hurt Deysel’s chances of making the Bok squad. Weird since he hasn’t really had much gametime in the last couple of weeks. Anybody know if he picked up an injury over the weekend?

I’m a bit concerned about all of these changes to a winning team. Tim we couldn’t help but why not start pat at 10 where he’s been good all season?

  • I unmderstand the starting loose trio, but not why we dropped Deysel and kept Kanko in a game which is going to be brutal up front.

The Whitehead situation is sadly out of Plumtree’s control, but moving Pat to the back means Grant and the loosies will run at 10 all day. If Fred kicks another stupid grubber in the oppo 22 I am going to lose it!

I don’t like that he made a bunch of changes. Just when the team started to look good.

Don’t understand the thinking behind retaining michalak and shifting Pat to 15 though. Can only reason that Ludik is still not 100% and playing Viljoen could be a risk in a game of this magnitude.

These combos are not NEW they been played many a time during currie cup..plus if freddy is having an ‘off’ day, hopefully plum will have a piece of mind to move pat and put louis at fullback. Meyer might be our weak point though, but let’s hope get defends his channel like his life depends on it :)

And Coetzee will be added to that list and i also hope Heyneke word wakker and he sees that Whitehead/Jordaan combo could work for the Boks in the future. Bladdy useless Bulls backline players  Except for Hougaard of course

  • Selection could cost us here. Pat has to be backed all the time at fh. Feel really disappointed that we have been consistent in selection here. Think not having Deysel on the bench will be a huge error in selection too.

I would have gone with the same team as last week except with Ludik at fh Pat at fh and of course Bosman at 12 cause Tim is injured.

Damn man if we had to mess about here we should have then started Pat at 12 with Jordaan at 13 and Fred at fb and start Ludik at fb. That would have been a better bet. Also should have kept the same starting loosies as last week with the full set of loosies on the bench like last week.

This selection could backfire on us.

On the issue of Fred, he can be inconsistent, yes, but just because he had a good game last week does not mean that his next game will be a shocker, he is playing with confidence at the moment, tackling and taking the ball up fiercely – he has not been shying away. I think Plum is backing him because he is probably a confidence player and is tapping into that at the moment.

  • @Uli (Comment 65) : That would have been a better bet for us having Lambie at 12. His defence is top class too. Also think he and Jordaan as a centre pairing would be something else to see. And if Freddie could play another great game like last week then we would have been sorted with Ludik at fb.

Damn man we should have started with the same loosies as last week with Deysel, Alberts and Kanko on the bench. That was a awesome bench.

Not so confident now. Stormers will be feeling a little easier looking at our selection.

  • @Uli (Comment 70) : I agree, but I’m inclined to give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt here. They are after all on a 3 match unbeaten ‘streak’. And Ludik is coming back from injury, its not like he was dropped…

  • @Uli (Comment 69) : Yip.

Look I think Lambie will be selected at fb for the Boks against England. He has a good game with the Boks there and Meyer will stick with him as the Bok fb. That is great for the youngtser
really, but at the Sharks we have to play him at Fh all of the time. That is where he is the best for us.

Ag, just have to back our boys totally and hope they can win this game on Saturday.

  • @Uli (Comment 68) : “So much for the importance of showing confidence…” err that’s exactly what he is doing, showing confidence in someone that has found form (and hopefully keeps it)

As to the supporter bit, the team is not selected with us in mind but with the match ahead. All Im saying is get out there and support the team and moan all you want after the game – if necessary.

  • Putting Lambie at full back could be Meyers request because i think he wants to play lambie at the back for the june internationals.

  • @CapeShark (Comment 80) : I would thought a stormers player would not mind a “tight groin” on the field!

  • This could be a stroke of genius or an epic fail, I would have gone with this team even if tim was fit to play givin the game plan that the sharks is looking play against the stormers ( wich is the most succesfull tactic against the stormers in recent times) , no offense to ludik, he is solid and every thing but don’t have a great kicking game and neither is he a great threat on the counter as well, loosies too help cover the flyhalf line on defense, like I said this could work or go haywire. Hope the wings practised the kick and chase this week.
