Things are going fro bad to worse for the Lions, who lost their fourth straight tour match against the Western Force in Perth yesterday morning. Prop forward CJ van der Linde has been cited for a biting offence and looks to face a lengthy ban.
Force captain David Pocock complained to referee Garrett Williamson that Toby Lynn had been bitten by van der Linde in a ruck in the 10th minute the game. The official duly referred the matter for further analysis through a white card and the citing commissioner has indicated that he feels it meets the red card threshold – in other words, there must be at least some available video evidence of the bite.
Mike Heron, SANZAR Judicial Officer, will now step in an decide to either schedule a hearing, or dish out a punishment remotely, although given the seriousness of the offence, the former is more likely. This incident makes us think back to how players like Johan le Roux and Wikus van Heerden (senior) saw their careers effectively ended through similar biting allegations whilst on tour to the Antipodes; Lions fans should presumably be bracing themselves for a similar outcome for the 31-year-old van der Linde, whose constant injury troubles continue to be a blight on his playing career.Tweet
