SA Barbarians coach Jimmy Stonehouse has named his match 22′s for the two midweek tour games against England early next month. Stonehouse, who coaches the Pumas, has leant heavily on players he’s worked with before in Witbank to make up the bulk of the Northern side, while Boland and the EP Kings dominate the Southern selection.

Kings centre Wayne Stevens will lead the Southern side, with a smattering of Sevens Boks, including big loose forward Vleis Engelbrecht, in the mix. Boland’s Elgar Watts will be at flyhalf, with the Pumas’ Corne Fourie called up from the Northern ranks due to a lack of loosehead prop options in the region.

Pumas centre JW Jonker leads the Northern selection, with former Bulls winger Danwel Demas perhaps the most familiar name on the team sheet. Also look out for former Sharks junior Luvo “MB” Lusaseni, picked from the Leopards ranks to play flank. Replacement prop Zane Killian is the sole representative from the Valke, with a smattering of Griffons players also making the grade.

  • I think that this is something of a wasted opportunity.
By all means pick a side made up of players from the CC B section province ie a combination of these two teams but i would have been far more interested in a team of our best U23 players (most of whom are contracted to the major provinces) playing against the English.
Ignoring injuries and SA U20 call ups – players like Johan Goosen, Kolisi, Koster, Marcel Coetzee, Steven Kitshoff, Bresler etc

  • @steve (Comment 1) : completely agree that this is a waste, but it’s symptomatic of the “tail wags dog” situation we ahve in SA Rugby where the presidents of 9 minor unions with not a shred of common sense between the lot of them hold all of the voting power.

  • @steve (Comment 1) :

The problem is that all those players are involved in the Baby Boks campaign in the Junior World Championship..

I agree with your outlook though, we need more game time for that age group, especially if they can form certain important combinations already..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 3) :

A few are u20 (Kitshoff & Goosen) and a few are also injured – i see that jaco Taute is now out for a month but it would have been interesting to see an U23 side picked from players in the Super Rugby squads.
Back three: Jaco Taute, Andries Coetzee, JJ Engelbrecht (I think)
midfield: Franna Venter, Robert Ebersohn, Johan Sadie, Paul Jordaan
    Flyhalf: Johan Goosen, Elton Jantjies
    Scrumhalf: Ross Cronje, Louis Schreuder
loosies: marcel Coetzee, Siya Kolisi, Nick Koster, Rynard Elstadt, Grant Hattingh
Locks: Eben Etsebeth, Ruan Botha, Paul Willemse, PS du Toit
Props: Coenie Oosthuizen, Stephen Kitshoff, Dale Chadwick, Caylib Oosthuizen
    Hookers: Kyle Cooper, Callie Visagie

i’m sure there are a few more but these are names off the top of my head based on 2007 Craven week and SA U20 in 2009. Short of a tighthead but I’m sure there is one at the Stormers. Not sure about Julian Redlinghys age wise or Cheetahs wing Willie le Roux

  • Do Griquas players not qualify for any of these teams?

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 5) : Griquas are A section so not for these two Barbarians sides

  • @steve (Comment 6) : Are Pumas not also A section or have they reverted back to the 6 team formula already or am I just damn confused. Anyway, how stupid a rule is this – its not as if Griquas players are going to get any better exposure to international teams just because they are playing in the A section, but even more baflling is that one of the games is being played in Kimberley – Im sure the good folks of Kimberley would have liked to see a few of their own on the field.

  • Why is there only 6 Kings players, they are a Super rugby team. Doesn’t Jimmy know that?
