Another blind moment

Here we have the second in our “A Picture is Worth a Thousand Swear Words” series, dedicated to blind referess and touch judges throughout the world.

This one is courtesy of our friends over at www.pharside.co.uk and demonstrates more than just a little doubt about the legality of the pass from Jean de Villiers that set up Gio Aplon’s second try at Kings Park on Saturday.

Once again, be sure to notice, in particular, the position of referee Jaco Peyper and ask yourself, calmly and quietly after taking a minute to compose yourself, “HOW THE HELL DID HE NOT SEE THAT???”

  • Yip, this could cost us a lot. It gave the Stormers 1 point. Sure, they could have gone and scored a legitimate try just after that, but the Sharks could just as well have gone and scored from the scrum we would have gotten and if not that scrum, with the Stormers still 12 points behind at this stage we would not have had as much scoreboard pressure on us and chances are we may have gone and scored a bonus point try.

But lets just take the 7 points the ref gave the Stormers away from them. This makes a massive difference on where we might stand at the end of the competition. It could be the difference between 1/2 and 4/5/6.

Something should be done so that things like this can be eliminated from the competition…it happens way to much to just go on like this.

Maybe we should have had a blind moment segment from the start of the competition, because it has been happening right across the competition, at least one like this every week.

  • In the heat of the game, many a rugby ref has gotten confused and thought he was officiating at a gridiron game.

That was a great pass from the Stormers stalwart quarterback.

Let’s cut the Pied Peyper some slack!

  • We should not forget we have a bonus point against the Brumbies courtesy of a ref mistake too. Whitehead juggled the ball against a Brumbies player before regathering it – should have been ruled as a knock

I do agree the refs and linesmen are making lot of mistakes, but hopefully these even out over the season

How the hell did McLeod not see the move happening and why didn’t he tackle Aplon?

  • @Letgo (Comment 8) : I also saw it – very clearly as it happened and anyone who knows me will tell you I don’t have the fastest eyes in the business :)

My view, by the way, is that the Stormers would probably still have scored there had the pass been backward. I guess we’ll never know, though.

  • Hmmmm I didnt realise that Peyper was right in line and looking at the play at that time.

I wonder if I should email this shot to his law firm. Bahh why waste the time, he already knew about it at about 71:45 into the game.

  • @robdylan (Comment 18) : Is there not an official referee rating system after each match – whereby the ref is scored on all his decisions? Does it require a fan web-site to trigger this process?

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Yes, but it wasn’t backward. If you knock the ball over the try line, you would also have scored had you hung on to it, but that just doesn’t count.

Peyper or on of his AR’s should have been able to see this.

  • @Ben (Comment 12) : Didn’t you read Animal Farm in high school. Well if you did, I was trying to convey the same idea that took place in this book.

It is always more fair or more for some than others… it never evens out.

I’d like it to be evened out by things like this being eliminated, not by hoping that by the end of the competition the refs would have made enough errors that each team got 2 tries, 3 bonus point and 1 win by way of referees errors.

It’s like the commentators saying, I don’t care if he blows it like that as long as he’s consistent…No, if he is wrong, then that would mean he is consistently wrong, which is not acceptable imo.

  • On the same subject, Christo Buchner really got my goat in his match report on this game in Rapport. He devoted a fair amount of space, telling us as fact, that Mvovo had been in touch before scoring his try and that it should not have stood, but he did not mention a single word about the blatant forward pass to Aplon.

Agendas maybe, and just last week I still liked the guys work and said it.

  • @Letgo (Comment 24) :

Refs are human, they cannot get absolutely everything right.

Can you say that absolutely everything that you do in your job is always 100% perfect?!

Ben’s point was that if it does favour one person, you cannot call it ‘even-out’.

It will never go away, this time we got screwed, next time we will gain from an error. I bet we won’t get a picture and everybody moaning about it then..

  • for the sake of consistency.

can we get a STILL on the Sharks’ first try of the season? where whitehead CLEARLY foisted the ball to mcleod who was in front of him?

can we also get another STILL of the knock-on before whitehead’s try either against the Brumbies or was it Canes…

Bud, looking for some info. Who are the Kings looking to retain for next year from their current squad? I’m thinking Mpho, Jaques Engelbrecht, SP Marais, their young flyhalf (I think the one who was in the car crash  ) and Luke, but Luke hasn’t played in ages! What’s the story there? Thanks.

  • @Megatron (Comment 37) : What the hell?! Have they both just been injured at different times? Gray is a class centre, but I seem to recall he got stuck on the wing. Sorry, he’s one I’d retain as well.

Mangweni is too old, great player in his day, Stick has failed to deliver in the fifteen man game and Engels is a possibility to mentor the young talent.

I see MTS is captain of the Baabaas, great stuff.
