Minimal changes for Sharks

JP Pietersen shifts from wing to outside centre, with Odwa Ndungane coming into the starting lineup as the only change to the Sharks starting team to take on the Lions this weekend.

John Plumtree and his fellow coaches have opted to maintain momentum and continuity going into this weekend’s game, rather than risk the loss of synergy that could come from rotation. As such, exactly the same pack of forwards that did so well against the Stormers will start against the Lions.

In fact, the only changes to the 22 (bar one) are enforced by the loss of Paul Jordaan and Pieter-Steph du Toit to the Baby Bok camp. Jandre Marais comes in to replace Du Toit in a straight swap in the number 18 jersey, with Jean Deysel set to play club rugby for a second successive week. Marais hasn’t played since the Sharks’ last tour match against the Blues.

Ndungane’s elevation to the starting team opens up a space on the bench, which has been filled (I suspect grudgingly) by Marius Joubert, while Louis Ludik comes in at the expense of Riaan Viljoen in the number 22 jersey. The latter was brought onto the bench last week as a late change after Ludik hurt his foot at gym – he has now recovered sufficiently to join the squad that will face his former team mates.

  • Deysel and Kanko should go revive their careers @ The Cheetahs. I’m sure they’ll get the game time they deserve there, depth is one thing, but poor player management is another all together. You only improve with game time, and Deysel has not put a foot wrong this season, his performances for the VC team and his 10 minute cameos suggested he was hungry and in good form. But if you don’t pass the ball to him, or give him no time on the pitch, what do you expect?

Deysel, go to Cheetahs my boy. You’re a Free Stater from birth, and you will be most welcome there! They love a big hulky traditonal No 7.

  • Last year we drew with the Lions and then beat the Bulls. I’m happy about the continuity because we need to bury the Lions.

We need to show some ruthlessness in this game and put up a big score against the Lions.

I probably would have rotated the loosies a bit but I hope we’re so far ahead at half time that we can afford to give Daniel, Coetzee, Bissie, Jannie, Lambie and Sykes the second half off.

  • There is an article on Supersport.co.za that states that our beloved Freddie has just played himself back into the French side for the tour to Argentina next month. Well done Freddie. The guys in the Sharks gear that annoyed me most was Kevin Putt and Luke Watson. My favourite of all times must be the little terrier called Craig Davidson.

Look, Putt wasn’t good enough as coach and man manager… he should never have been appointed in the first place, but he did his best under the very trying circumstances in which he found himself.

One player I liked who played for the Sharks and who has really made his name kak since he left has been Ollie le Roux.

“I know Heyneke likes Willem Alberts, but it is also worrying that he is in the top five in Super Rugby in terms of missed tackles. He’s missed 24 tackles in six games, and that’s bloody high. Marcel Coetzee is the guy I would pick, he is in the top five in terms of tackle stats and in ball carries.”

The former Bok mentor also called Spies, the Bulls captain, “a flat-track bully” who had never impressed him.

“Loose forwards are a big issue. I don’t rate Spies as a defender, he is poor on defence and his close ball skills at the back of the scrum are also poor,” Mallett said. “He is only good against weak teams. A flat-track bully who will run in three tries. We are missing out on someone who is good from the base of the scrum.

Mallett also called for an increase in discipline for the two Bok front row brothers Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis.

“We have to be very careful with the Du Plessis brothers — they are a five penalty package for opposition teams. Bismarck does turn over ball, but he gives two to three penalties away at the breakdown. Jannie gets pinged at scrumtime and there’s always something, a stiff arm or going over the top. In terms of discipline they need to be spoken to but the Sharks front row, when they are on song, are formidable.”

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 165) : Good thanks. But very busy. Which is why I have been somewhat scarce. Been travelling a fair bit too. And commuting to Durbs for home games!

  • He was probably an awesome guy, but Rudi Keil made it very hard for me to support him on the field.

The hair, the black gloves, the goosestep that fooled NOBODY EVER (not even once) and the lack of perceptible rugby talent just rubbed me up the wrong way.

  • @cody007 (Comment 180) : umm, brainiac, Meyer included 5 Sharks loose forwards in his squad. How exactly is Plumtree meant to accommodate all of them (plus Botes) in his match 22?

We all bitch and moan when there isn’t enough depth, but we also bitch and moan when players get left out of match day squads. Can’t have it both ways.

  • @robdylan (Comment 122) :  I can not understand how a big and powerfull looking guy like Spies is pushed over so quickly. He spends too much time of his feet. Kanko is far better in this area. Kanko just needs to go straight and stop drifting sideways.

Great to see Bulls are impressed by McLeods play!

  • Watched B&A, and reading above comments from Mallet, I cannot say that I dissagree with his views. I like the way that he says what he wants to, no sugar coating! Just like PDivvy, but Mallets makes sense!
