England lose Brown, Barritt

While the Springboks appear to be in pretty good shape, injury-wise, after Saturday’s opening encounter in Durban, the English have taken some casualties.

Fullback Mike Brown has been forced out of the tour after dislocating a thumb – in the process of attempting to stop Jean de Villiers’ try – and will return to the UK for treatment. His place in the tour party will be taken by Bath’s 25-year-old Nick Abendanon, who (as luck would have it) is already in Joburg, having just attended Pieter Dixon’s wedding. Abendanon is no stranger to South Africa, having earned his first test cap in the Republic in 2007; what’s more, he was actually born in Johannesburg too!

Centre Brad Barritt has also been ruled out of at least the second test. The former Sharks man sustained a lacerated eyeball, which required minor surgery to correct on Sunday morning. He is recuperating at home in Durban, but hopes to be able to join up with the tour party early next week and come into consideration for the third test, in Port Elizabeth.

  • Good luck to Brad! What a loss to SA. Really impressed by his play on Saturday.

  • Abendanon… Cheapest option or deserved call-up? Guessing the latter but always interesting.

Gareth Delve (Rebels 8) has been called up as a replacement for Toby Faletau… but in that case they’d surely struggle to find someone on par with Delve in Wales at the moment.

  • Both injuries are pretty big losses for England but as I understand it Brad will be back for the third test.

  • @ChrisS (Comment 1) : Can you honestly say he would be starting ahead of Steyn or JdV. He is a loss to SA Rugby but he isn’t better than what we have. He would be a nice back up.

  • @lostfish (Comment 7) : I tend to agree, hes a awesome player, but we do have plenty of cover in centre as it is. For him it was a good move to go to the UK. We as Sharks do miss him though.
