Sharks under 19 hooker Franco Marais has received a late call-up to the South African Under 20 squad ahead of this weekend’s IRB Junior World Championship semi-final against old foe Argentina.
The former Transvalia man was unlucky to miss out on selection to the final squad; he was very much a part of Dawie Theron’s plans during the build up to the tournament and featured regularly in the warm up games. An ankle injury sustained against, ironically, Argentina head of the tournament, though, had appeared to scupper his participation.
Tuesday’s rousing win against the English was not without price, though – Bulls hooker Jason Thomas unfortunately suffered a facial fracture during the course of the game and has been ruled out for a period of around 6 weeks as a result. We’d like to assure readers, though, that any allegations about the injury being caused by lock Paul Willemse punching him in the face after screwing up his fifth line out throw in a row, are completely unfounded! Thomas has, of course, been withdrawn from the squad, with Marais called up as his replacement.
The Baby Bok camp has also confirmed that while both flanker Wiaan Liebenberg and flyhalf Tony Jantjies are still in doubt, due to wrist and knee injuries respectively, neither will be replaced at this stage.Tweet
