Sharks fans desperate to see some of their heroes in action this week would do well to get down to the Riverside Sports Centre tonight, where the top two teams in this year’s Moor Cup, Varsity College Old Boys and Jonsson College Rovers, will clash at 8pm.

Oldies will boast one of the more experienced line ups ever to grace a club game, with the combination of Marius Joubert and Odwa Ndungane adding an astounding 39 test caps to their back line. Not that Rovers will take a step back either – in fact, they boast no fewer than three current Sharks hookers in their match 22!

There will be plenty of familiar faces all round; Julian Redelinghuys continues his return from injury, playing at 3 for Rovers alongside provincial team mates in Craig Burden and Dale Chadwick. Tera Mtembu is also in the mix, along with a host of other who have played Vodacom Cup rugby for the Sharks. Look out for a welcome return to the local club scene for Kobus de Kock, playing off the bench for Rovers after a stint with Lazio in Italy.

Oldies will have yet another Sharks prop in their ranks, with Wors Herbst coming up against Chadwick at scrum time. Shakrs under 21 lock Paul Sanders will also be in action, along with one of the form players in this year’s club competition, flank Brian Shabangu.

Teams:
Varsity College Old Boys: 15 Steven Moir, 14 Odwa Ndungane, 13 Marius Joubert, 12 Alessandro Fernandes, 11 Troy Chiocotti, 10 Warren Randell, 9 Rowan Howse, 8 Jason Jones, 7 Brian Shabangu, 6 Max Tripeppi (capt), 5 Paul Sanders, 4 Marc van Aswegen, 3 Wiehahn Herbst, 2 Dean Muir, 1 Dylan Rutherford

  • “Oldies will boast one of the more experienced line ups ever to grave a club game….”

    I won’t bore you young readers with the Durban club line-ups on the 80s which far exceeded this team , not to mention the likes of Tukkies and Maties of the same period. But granted this is one of the most experienced club team for many a decade.

  • It must be a good club team if Kyle Cooper is still on the bench! Poor oke.

  • @Dive Pass, totally agree. I remember watching a Harlequins game in the early 90′s when Rudi Visagie, Wahl Bartmann, Andre Joubert, Van der Westhuizen and other Bok legends played. Harlequins must have had more than 100 Bok caps on the day. I was only a kid but gosh it blew me away….

  • I am sure MJ will be more of a hinderance than a help even at this level.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 4) :

    I think Cooper is a better hooker than Burden.

    Can’t believe he is still ‘waiting in the wings’ :roll:

    Paying the rent and all those good things….

    @Grasshopper (Comment 5) :
    Harlequins was one of the Durban teams that came to mind

    @wpw (Comment 7) :
    Agreed…waiting in the wings for the wing.

    But don’t you Weepies wish you had a line of hookers like we have ….its Point Road, it attracts better hookers than Long Street.

  • if you look carefully at the Rovers bench, you’ll notice that Cooper is the replacement prop.

  • @Dive pass, checked with my dad and he confirmed it was Wahl Bartmann, Vleis Visagie, Robert du Preez, Andre Joubert & Cabous vd Westhuizen playing on that day. 5 Boks in one team at a club game on the Bluff with about 10,000 supporters, now those were the days of Club rugby. Also, went to the Toyota Club Championships in Durban when Naas Botha and co were playing for Tukkies, Maties, Despatch etc, great days at the old Kings Park…

  • @Dive Pass (Comment 1) : A Collegians 1st Xv of the late 70′s would have been a case of spotting the odd uncapped Natal player. Not too many Boks around in those days though – post 1980 Wynand Claasen, Tim Cocks and gawie Visagie all played club rugby when not on Natal duty. DHS Old Boys had their share of Wallabies – Dick Cocks, gary Pearse and the great Mark Loane as well as the odd Puma like Jorge Allen in the mid 80′s

  • @robdylan (Comment 16) : But where will he go? As much as I like him, can’t really see a future for him at the Sharks with all the 15′s we have.
