Boks sweat on three injured stars

A weekend medical update from SARU had confirmed that three of Heyneke Meyer’s Bok squad are facing an anxious wait to be cleared to play in this weekend’s third test in Port Elizabeth.

Many a fan was deeply concerned as lock Juandre Kruger was carried off the Coca Cola Park field on a stretcher on Saturday; the good news in this case, though, is the confirmation from team doctor Craig Roberts that a scan has cleared him of any serious damage. Not to say that he’s been given the green light to play this weekend, however; that will only follow later in the week once the player has been further assessed.

Fullback Pat Lambie twisted his left ankle early in the game and never quite came right afterwards, while outstanding flank Willem Alberts picked up a medial knee ligament strain. Both will require conservative management this week and may still be cleared to play. Then again, with the England series already wrapped up an the Rugby Championship against Australia, New Zealand and Aregentina just around the corner, Meyer may be forgiven if he opts to wrap Alberts, in particular, in cotton wool for the time being. The player has proven himself invaluable to the Bok cause, but has also carried a massive work load over two seasons and could do with a bit of careful management.

Nothing has yet been said about replacements, but one feels that with Frans Steyn out, the Boks are definitely short of a utility back; whether that’s a centre or a fullback will, I guess, depend on how Lambie looks today. I wouldn’t expect Meyer to go outside the current group of forwards, though; Franco van der Merwe can cover for Kruger, while both Ryan Kankowski and Jacques Potgieter offer ball-carrying loose forward options as an alternative to Alberts.

  • Nooooooooo!!! Please do not elevate Wynand Olivier to the starting lineup!!! Rather try the following:

JDV 12, JPP 13, Mvovo or Basson 14, Aplon 15
JDV 12, Habs 13, Mvovo or Basson 11, Aplon 15
    Ruan 10, Morne 12, JDV 13, Aplon 15

Failing that we could keep Morne at 10, JDV at 13, and string up a tackle bag between them; it’s sure to be more effective than Timotei in the midfield…

    @robdylan (Comment 10) : Hahaha!

@Ben (Comment 13) : Best defensive 13. JP best attacking. JJ – rubbish. WO – rubbish. JDV – Absolute supreme centre all around.

  • No matter how much cotton wool Meyer “wraps” Alberts in this week/weekend… the Sharks are going to trash him in the next few weeks anyway. Can’t see them taking the responsible approach for the Bok cause? Not with the Superugby play-offs at stake.

  • If Pat can’t play, I would expect Aplon to play at 15.

    HM’s likely backline would be:

    15 Aplon
    14 JPP
    13 JDV
    12 Olivier
    11 Habana
    10 Steyn
    9 Hougie

Ruan, Jantjes and Basson on bench. JPP can cover 13, JDV can move to 12 if needed.

Not what I would do…but the most likely.

  • @Villie (Comment 20) : Think that may be the backline if Pat is injured except don’t think Elton will be on the bench. Think it will be Joe Pietersen. From what we have read he has been called up to train with the Boks this week. Joe covers fb and fh. Think Meyer will want to cover himself with a fb this week after probably losing two fbs in two consecutive weeks. Ruan could cover fb as well.

A bit worried with WO at inside centre this week. Think Barritt will be back as well for England.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 23) : Probably could be wrong. Read it on Sports24. Just checked Louws twitter and he mentions it there, but it could be that Joe is back in training for the Stormers. Jeez some sites just jump on to something before they actually have proper information.

So then if Pat is out injured Elton should be on the bench then. Or will it be Ruan to cover fb,fh and sh? Damn injuries, so wish we could just have gone with the same starting team as last week. Have always said consistency will bring success. Players need game time together, the injuries are a real pity.

See that Small-Smith is out with that knee injury for the Baby Boks final this Friday. Huge loss if Jordaan still has that hammie injury then we could be in trouble there too.

  • Joe Pietersen called up to Springbok squad
    June 18, 2012

DHL Western Province fullback Joe Pietersen has been called up to the Springbok squad in Port Elizabeth following the non-availability of a number of fullback options for Saturday’s third and final Castle Incoming Tour Test against England.

Pietersen will join the squad later on Monday as they prepare for Saturday’s Test at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

Injuries to fullbacks Zane Kirchner (knee) and Pat Lambie (ankle) in the first two Tests, as well as Frans Steyn’s non-availability because he is getting married, has necessitated the call-up of Pietersen.

Pietersen, who had been struggling with a back injury, had been given the all clear by the Western Province medical team to join to Boks on Monday.

“Joe has always been part of our plans and also attended our final Planning Camp in Durban shortly before the England series started,” explained Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Injuries are part of the game and something you can’t plan for, but we always knew Frans was not going to be available for this Test. Joe knows our systems and game plans and I’m sure he will slot in easily.”

Lambie and Willem Alberts, who injured knee ligaments in the second Test, both underwent scans on Monday morning in Port Elizabeth. They have not yet been ruled out of the Test and a further decision on their availability will be made by Wednesday.

“We’ve decided not to call up a replacement for Willem as we have enough cover amongst the loose forwards in the squad,” said Meyer.

If Joe is in training with the Boks then think he will be on the bench and not Elton. He covers fb and fh.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 26) : JPP could but think he will cover outside centre. Plenty scenarios who can cover where.

    Players that cover various positions:

    Ruan. 15/10/9
    JPP. 15/14/13
    Aplon. 15/14
    Joe. 15/10
    Habs. 13/11
    Hougie 11/9
    JdV 14/12

  • If the players test 100% and can play, go with the starting XV of last week. The more the players play together the better they will be. That is obvious. Though even if there is a niggle a player must not play. Don’t risk the injury to become chronic or not have a player that could play the full 80min. Damn pity that Fransie not there this week as well.
