29-year-old loose forward Frans Viljoen has returned to South Africa from Italian club Aironi and will play for the Cheetahs in this year’s Currie Cup.
It’s the second time that the former Grey College back rower has returned early from an overseas stint, with 2007′s move to Stade Francais (from Griquas) lasting little more than 6 months. This time around, he stuck it out in Italy for about a year before being released early from his contract to return to his beloved Bloemfontein.
Viljoen, who played for the Leopards before moving on the Griquas and then Free State, told Beeld’s Jóhann Thormählen that he missed the intensity of South African rugby and still has the desire to win the Currie Cup.
