The second match this Friday morning takes us back to Australian derby rugby, which we will look forward to at first, but once the match kicks off and we see the quality of rugby played, we will switch off and wait for the real stuff to continue tomorrow.

In any case, the Rebels host the Reds. The Rebels have star names such as Kurtley Beale and James O’Connor back in the team after injuries plagued them before the break. Stirling Mortlock has been named to start at inside centre, even though he is injured and will most likely not even take the field. Here’s hoping he does in fact, as this will be the legend’s last game in Australia before calling time on his career.

The Reds are chasing down the Brumbies to take the top of the Australian conference, putting them in the play-offs and in with a shot to actually defend their title. Whether they will be able to catch up, I am personally not so sure. They do have Quade Cooper back in the flyhalf jersey, and with an in form Will Genia back, who knows what this team can achieve.

Rebels: 15. Kurtley Beale, 14. Mark Gerrard, 13. Mitch Inman, 12. Stirling Mortlock (c), 11. Cooper Vuna, 10. James O’Connor, 9. Nick Phipps, 8. Gareth Delve, 7. Hugh Perrett, 6. Tom Chamberlain, 5. Hugh Pyle, 4. Cadeyrne Neville, 3. Jono Owen, 2. Adam Freier, 1. Nic Henderson.

Reserves: 16. Ged Robinson, 17. Rodney Blake, 18. Al Campbell, 19. Tim Davidson, 20. Nic Stirzaker, 21. Lachlan Mitchell, 22. Julian Huxley.

Reds: 15 Luke Morahan, 14 Dom Shipperley, 13 Anthony Faingaa, 12 Mike Harris, 11 Digby Ioane, 10 Quade Cooper, 9 Will Genia (c), 8 Scott Higginbotham, 7 Liam Gill, 6 Jake Schatz, 5 Adam Wallace-Harrison, 4 Rob Simmons, 3 James Slipper, 2 Saia Faingaa, 1 Greg Holmes.

Replacements: 16 James Hanson, 17 Ben Daley, 18 Radike Samo, 19 Beau Robinson, 20 Ben Lucas, 21 Chris F’Sautia, 22 Nick Frisby.

Lets hope the Rebels can keep the Reds try-less in the 2nd half.

Is it too much to ask for a Rebels win?

  • The way it looks now think the Reds will go through and not the Sharks. Reds have Landers and Tahs to play next. They should beat both those teams and probably pick up a bonus point as well, maybe 2 that would leave them on 59.

For Sharks to finish above them we would have to beat Bulls and Cheetahs with a bonus point. Just can’t see us beating the Bulls next week with a bonus point, especially after our dismal performance against the Lions.

In any case think we would not have made it anyhow. We could have beaten the Brumbies just could not have seen us beat the Chiefs in NZ after. So what is the point then? Would rather our Shark Boks get rest and not pick up injuries from here on and be ready for the Boks RC.

Reds have a good chance. If the make the 6th play off which looks like they could they only have a short travel to play Brumbies then if they beat them head off to play Chiefs. They have beaten the Chiefs already and who knows could beat them again.

Anyhow for now just don’t see Sharks making it. Will have to wait for next year once again.
