Thanks for nothing, Todd!

The Sharks have a number of reasons to be annoyed with Todd Blackadder and the Crusaders after this weekend’s poor showing, at home, which saw them lose to the Hurricanes.

The obvious one, of course, is that in losing, it allowed the Canes to keep ahead of the Sharks on the log, meaning that in order to move a clear log point ahead, the latter will now need to pick up a bonus-point win against the Bulls on Friday. Many were hoping that a good Crusaders win would knock the Hurricanes back out of the knock-out places and leave the Sharks with just the Reds to worry about. That, of course, didn’t happen and the Canes are still ahead of the Sharks and very much in the running for a play-off spot.

Perhaps more annoying, though, is the fact that the Crusaders’ slip-up has left the door open for the Bulls to grab fourth place on the log, which they duly did in thrashing the Cheetahs. If there’s one thing we know about the Bulls it’s that they don’t easily let go of an opportunity to play at home, meaning there is absolutely no chance of them easing up even slightly against the Sharks on Friday – if they do, they could end up handing fourth spot and the right to play at home, right back to the Crusaders.

In other words, the Sharks are going to have to do this one the hard way and it’s going to be war out on the Kings Park turf on Friday night.

  • 2010 Comes to mind here.

We had to beat the Bulls and get the bonus point to be able to reach the semi’s, it was the second or third last game of the season (I think).

We left scoring tries for too late and ended up scoring our third try just before full time, Kockott dropped kicked the ball from the sideline (If memory serves me right he actually slotted the kick) and then that wretched hooter sounding full time.

Yeah, déja vu all over again. We’re trapped in a twilight zone.

  • @ Rob, why don’t you rather change the heading to,” Thanks for nothing Sharks”? They had their destiny in their own hands, I see no reason to show Todd a finger. Sharks only have them salves to blame, pity they can’t seem to learn from years gone by, each season they self destruct , with similar situations to get into the finals.

  • @Uli (Comment 4) : Couldn’t agree more! The Sharks shouldn’t be relying on other teams but rather on their OWN EFFORTS to make the playoffs. As far as I’m concerned they knocked themselves out by losing to the lowly Lions. We should thank the Crusaders and/or Hurricanes for pushing us out of the playoff picture in 2012 and thus one step closer (hopefully) to a new coaching structure.

  • Let’s be honest… we have no one but ourselves to blame for our current position. If the players had actually approached the Lions game properly (and in my mind, there is no way that they did if everyone else can beat the Lions and we lose by a bonus point), we would have had 5 points from that game and our destiny would be in our hands.

Another point on the honest train – does any team deserve to win any tournament in which they went into a game believing they only had to run onto the field and win and then get thrashed on that same field? Not in my eyes. This probably controversial and I will get flamed but so what, it’s the truth.*

It probably serves the players right if we don’t end up in the playoffs and have to watch the games on TV like all of us couch rugby coaches.

  • Well, at the very least we can look forward to 2 more great games at Kings Park, regardless of the outcome of the competition, as I am certainly looking forward to the Bulls game and then hopefully again a game with all to play for against the Cheetahs.

Then a quarter final against the Brumbies and a semi final against the Chiefs, and a final against the Stormers or Bulls!

This is our thinking currently. But when you base your probabilities on possibilities, how can you at all think that the Sharks by any means stand a chance to go any further in the play-offs. Ons sukkel ons gatte af net om die play-offs te maak!!!

  • 1. We have seen this picture countless times from the Sharks before (and yet they still appear to have learned no lessons).
    2. The Sharks used to be a team with a realistic chance of finishing in the top 2 of the table, at the very least 4th. These days we appear to consistently scrape and rely on other results to hopefully finish in 6th place.
    3. I can’t stand these new 6 team play-offs. It rewards mediocrity.
    4. Finishing 6th out of 15 teams means squat. There is no honour or victory in this.
    5. A team finishing 5th or 6th in the competition stands no chance. No team can expect to win an away quarterfinal, away semifinal and away final in 3 consecutive weekends. Not even the Crusaders could do it last year.
    6. Why would we want to celebrate finishing 6th (if we even get that far)? Finishing 6th just means an extra stay of execution for a game or two. If you finish 6th after such a long season, you are simply not good enough to beat 3 better teams away over 3 straight weekends.
    7. The Sharks as a team seem to be soft in the head. They are known as “chokers” and do their best to keep this name alive. We need to address this institutional problem, the choke has happened far too consistently over the years to be coincidence.
    8. The loss to the lowly Lions was inexcusable. Had the Sharks won that game, their destiny would have been in their own hands and a home quarterfinal – and possibly even a conference top spot – was very much on the cards.
    9. Last year we had to beat the Bulls in the last game to finish 6th. We just managed that and we celebrated making the “play-offs”. We were rewarded with a trip to play the Crusaders and the rest is history. If we finish 6th again (a big if) I will not be praying for miracles this time round.
    10. The problem with consistently scrapping and scrounging our way to 6th (or not) is that the fans will start getting used to it and even seeing it as an achievement. “Well at least we made the play-offs”. Aikona, doesn’t work for me.
    11. Under Plumtree: 2009 – 6th, 2010 – 9th, 2011 – 6th, 2012 – 6th at the most, most likely 8th. Mediocrity. Not good enough AT ALL.
    12. Sack the coaches (all of them) now.
    13. I never want to hear a Sharks fan ever say “oh well, there’s always next year” again!

Is that now a permanent disclaimer on all your messages. It seems like you’ve been nailed for poking fun at the players a few times.

I think the team that wins it, deserves it. It doesn’t matter what they did before that moment. If we can go ahead win these last 2 games convincingly and then 3 more games after that in the play-offs… then we deserved to win this competition. There’s no such thing as: “But they showed so much heart or they were the most dominant team all season.” That’s the beauty of finals. Nothing matters. Only the 80min lying in front of you.

You have a point – the team would have done enough to get to the final so they would deserve to win the final. But the way the whole tournament is structured like @siorc (Comment 15) : says, it is doubtful whether any team who sneaks into the playoffs will be able to sustain the effort needed for 3 weeks in a row.

I don’t think we can really argue that, especially as fans of Natal when they showed everyone in the 1990 final that even the underdog can win against the rugby gods. *

  • Rob I fully agree with some of the comments posted….. the heading should read “Thanks for Nothing Sharks”. Why is it that Plumb and the boys are crying about an end of the season game. There were games during a long season that they should have won like some of the other teams but did not.
If you look back at the Sharks record in Super Rugby since Plumb has been in charge it is rather a poor one. So why cry now.
Before we start firing players or looking at other drastic measures….. do what the Lions did and get rid of the coach, maybe we will stand a better chance then.
Well this might all seem a bit harsh but the reality is…. there is big money being invested and spent to make it to the top…. but are we really buying the right players (I won’t mention names). So…. whoever does not agree with what I said…. take it on the chin!!
