While we are reasonably quiet and trying to get back into the (long) swing of the 2012 Superugby season, I thought it would be nice to take a comprehensive look at the laws that will go to trial in the next few months or six!

I will cover most of these laws in a few articles and I will cover the laws that will not go to trial, but that needs a change in application, in a different article, as this one might already turn out to be the longest article on Sharksworld to date. J There are also a few laws that I will just mention in general and not go into full detail – however if you are interested in getting more details on those – just let me know in the comments below!

Some law amendments have been approved for global trial by the IRB Council. The implementation dates are the start of the Northern Hemisphere season at or around September 1st 2012 and the start of the Southern Hemisphere season at or around January 1st 2013. It is not intended that a Union should implement the trial Law amendments mid season or mid competition. Unions will be given the opportunity to provide both quantitative and qualitative feedback on the trials.

In this article we will look at the first 4 of 9 law amendments to go on trial.

Law 3 : Number of Players – The Team

3.4 Players nominated as substitutes – Law 3.4 trial is for application from the November 2012 window international matches

Current Law

3.4 Players nominated as substitutes

For international matches a Union may nominate up to seven replacements / substitutes.

Amended Law

3.4 Players nominated as substitutes

For international matches a Union may nominate up to eight replacements / substitutes.

Law 4 : Players’ Clothing

GPS monitors may be worn

4.2 Special additional items for women

Female players allowed to wear tights

4.3 Studs

Specific sole configuration approved for trial

Law 6 : Match Officials

6.A.6  Referee consulting with others

Council approved trials which will extend the powers of the TMO. The trials will take place in selected competitions and protocols will be circulated at a later date.

Law 9 : Method of Scoring

9.B.1 Taking a conversion kick

Conversions to be completed within 90 seconds of try

Current Law

9.B.1 Taking a conversion kick

(e)

The kicker must take the kick within one minute from the time the kicker has indicated an intention to kick. The intention to kick is signalled by the arrival of the kicking tee or sand, or the player makes a mark on the ground. The player must complete the kick within the minute even if the ball rolls over and has to be placed again.

Sanction: The kick is disallowed if the kicker does not take the kick within the time allowed

Amended Law

9.B.1 Taking a conversion kick

(e)

The kicker must take the kick within one minute and thirty seconds (ninety seconds) from the time a try has been scored. The player must complete the kick within one minute and thirty seconds even if the ball rolls over and has to be placed again.

Sanction: The kick is disallowed if the kicker does not take the kick within the time allowed

I trust you find this informative! :)

  • So teams will be allowed 8 subs. It ake it that part of the amended law is that there has to be a full front row on the bench? That would eliminate the need of having a prop that can play 1 and 3. Good amendment IMO.

  • “Female players allowed to wear tights”

Wynand Olivier must be over the moon – first the pink away kit and now tights!

    (I know, it’s a terrible joke and I apologize)
