Big Fish

Then we will fight in the shade

Back in the days before Rob created the enlightened rugby blog that is now Sharksworld, we used to hang out on another site filled with some interesting folks. Before each Springbok match, there used to be a piece written by one author in a pseudo-epic style which was used to rile up the fans for the game. There were lots of “beholds” and “hearkens” in the piece, and I rather enjoyed it.

In recent times, Sharon has shown similar genius in writing articles that quickened the pulse and got the hopeless romantic in all of us chomping at the bit come kick-off time. Sadly, she isn’t around right now to ignite the fire in the belly before our Schizophrenic Sharks side takes on a Bulls side that smells a play-off place in the shadows.

I don’t have the talent of the above-mentioned authors, and sadly, I lack their zeal and faith in their teams. Perhaps partly due to my profession, I am a boring realist, and I think the Sharks will struggle to beat the Bulls, especially with all the injuries they have suffered.

No Willem Alberts means much less front-foot ball. No Pat Lambie means no clear direction and reliable boot in the flyhalf channel. And no Jacques Botes means no injection of pace and urgency at in the last quarter. The Sharks were up against it prior to these injuries – they are just much worse off now.

Added to the above, I remain chronically irritated with the simplistic game plan and sheer tactical naiveté shown by the coaching staff. John Plumtree has without fail managed a very mediocre mid-table finish in Super Rugby every year, and given the player resources at his disposal, this is just not good enough. It is time for a change at Ye Olde Kings Park.

So where does that leave us this weekend? Game already written off, television consciously tuned to just about anything not rugby-related? Well, not quite.

You see, supporting a team is not the same as worshipping one. As fans, we need not believe that the Sharks are the best team, that they can do no wrong, or that they deserve to be in the play-offs. We also need not believe that the heads of the union and the coaches know their arses from their elbows. We also need not believe that the Sharks will beat the Bulls this weekend.

No, rather, supporting the team means that we should still hope that the Sharks pull of a win, and if possible, we should tune in and support them on the day. And that’s what I am going to do.

The Sharks do not have the pedigree of the Bulls (great history and awesome set-up), WP (incredible talent-pool) or the Cheetahs (Grey College – say no more). We are a jumped up team of B-Divisioners who bought our way to the A-Division and had the audacity to stick around. We will have to be very clever if we hope to compete with the natural leaders in SA rugby. And sadly, right now we are not being that.

So, I think we need to be realistic and freely voice our concerns, but my fellow fans, I hope you will join me in still hoping for the best, and still believing in our team (which is not the same as believing in the current coaches, or players, for that matter). The Sharks, and Sharksworld, deserves a bit more passion than we have been showing of late – lets wear our hearts on our sleeves for a bit, and damn the sceptics to heck (that means you Megantron).

    Very well written mate..
I think its no doubt that I am very one eyed and only see us winning by 12 or more scoring 6 tries and send the bulls back with nothing…
Been wearing black and white only for the whole week…

  • Great piece.
I’m sick of people throwing around that old nonsense that if you’re a true supporter you will never criticise. That’s like saying that as a parent you must just accept whatever your kids do and never reprimand / discipline them.
As true supporters we should be voicing our concerns and unhappiness.
We should also give our all in support and hope for the best at all times.
This Friday I believe that the Sharks are going to win a squeaker. We’re still going to miss the playoffs, but we’ll knock the Bulls back a peg.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 4) : As soon as they change that 14″ stadium screen I’ll be much more willing to drive 1.5hrs to the stadium, pay too much for my ticket, sit in my crappy seat and watch the Sharks win.

But on that damn 1 x 14″ screen I have to set my PVR to record the game to actually know what happened in the game.

In the Barney’s army game, I only saw lardy-fatty-Brent Russel sidestep the supremely sculpted Sithole. That’s it.

  • @FireTheLooser (Comment 7) : KP should have a screen on both sides. Think we the only stadium that has one screen, there should be two.

I know most don’t agree with this, but I think we should move over to MM Stadium. World class and just sitting empty. Also the facilities there are world class. Pity there are only 135 suites there compared to the 400 or so suites at KP. Still think they could add more suites to MM Stadium though. It will cost us moving over I know, but it will be worth it.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 4) : As one whose arse regularly fills a space in the disabled zone at KP I feel entitled to express that I am fervently hoping for a regime change in coaching staff at the Sharks, sooner rather than later. I would hope that it doesn’t have to take losing to the Bulls to achieve that end, but if that is indeed the price to be paid for long term success then so be it.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 15) : That’s an upside down system, those that aren’t willing to come to help the Sharks through the Shit days (not because they can’t come, but because they won’t come) should not be allowed to come to the semi’s and finals (if we get there and like we did in 08/10 CC), but I’ve had to many heated debates about this. I never miss a game if I can help it.

Btw, I almost always have a few extra tickets, especially when it’s a little rainy or windy outside, since my sissy of a brother and dad won’t go if the weather is looking bad, so if anyone want tickets and feel it’s too expensive make a shout out to me before you just don’t go. I’ll even considering buying tickets for those who can’t fit match day tickets into their budget. I also have a bunch of buy one get one free tickets that I never redeem, so please don’t use ticket prices as an excuse if you haven’t talked to me before.

Thanks Fish, you got me pumped up!

  • @Zibbie (Comment 40) : BTW just on that comment, going to the game won’t just spur the guys on it also brings money to the union.

Sure TV contracts might even make a bigger profit than ticket sales, but the more people at the stadium the better the atmosphere and the bigger the viewer base and bigger the contract and the better the profit, the higher the acquisition of quality players and coaches and the better then the performances. So you see it’s not just your voice spurring the guys on, it’s so much more. The more fans a team has the better. That’s why a B division team managed to make it as big as the Sharks did, because we’re a popular team, because back in the day someone did something right and started the Sharks brand, it became popular and the team became a force to be reckoned with. Don’t tell me the fan/supporter base had nothing to do with it.

It’s like saying you love a musician or a TV show, but you download episodes and songs from the internet instead of actually spending money on them. Then when they get cancelled or stop making albums you complain about the production quality of their work and that although they started of with something cool/interesting/special that somewhere they lost their groove and therefore deserve their failure, not realising that your reluctance to buy their product directly influenced their ability to use the tools that will keep their product up to standard and even improving.

It’s always better for a team if their stadium is full. I bet if we can get the stadium full even when the boys aren’t playing that well, we (the fans/supporters) will directly influence the performances, maybe not right away, but if we’re persistent and keep filling the stadium and get the team back to the popular team they once were, I bet performances will also slowly improve.

Or we can just stay at home, the numbers can dwindle and in the mean time we can hope that their game improve in order for us to be willing to go to their games again… but only as long as they are winning and as long as all the springboks are playing and as long as it’s a semi final or a final, but only then, otherwise we won’t show up.

If you’re going to spend the time to watch the game on TV and you’re within a reasonable driving distance of the stadium, you should be at the game.

  • @Ben (Comment 48) : To a degree, yes! Especially if you have the time and means to get to the game. Otherwise they wouldn’t have made stadiums around sport fields, but rather just made constructions for easy set-up of camera crews and commentators.

I wonder how many people will go to the game if the game weren’t broadcasted within a 30min radius from the stadium? How many people are actually sitting at home 15/20 minutes away watching the game. And not in a tiny little apartment on the lawn furniture they had to steal from their neighbours, chewing on the stale piece of biltong discovered when scavenging the empty cupboards hoping to find something to fill the rumbling sounds of their starving body, getting up every 5 minutes to slap the side of the TV that can only be described as ancient, hoping to get back the signal that was barely visible in the first place.

How many times a week do we spend a hundred bucks without thinking twice about it? Going to the movies, renting dvd’s, buying accessories for our electronics, buying dvd’s, cd’s, books, magazines, going out to dinner, getting take-outs… how come buying a ticket to the game, can’t be one of them or even just replace one of them. If you spend R100 on something you don’t need this week, you’re within 30min of Kings Park and you don’t have other obligations, not plans, obligations, and you want to call yourself a sharks supporter, then you should be at the game tonight!

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 60) : Ouch. I stay approx 130km from Loftus. Not much joy in that either.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 61) : I used to see the Sharks once a year near my home town when they came down to play the Leopards. Not anymore thanks to the Currie Cup teams being reduced. :(

  • @Die Kriek (Comment 60) : @Original Pierre (Comment 61) : @Ben (Comment 62) : I feel fortunate to have lived 15min away from the stadium for more than 10 years now. I haven’t missed many games and that saying I won’t go to the game because I don’t think the Sharks deserves my support is a slap in the face to everyone who would love to go to the games, but really can’t.

So tonight I’m going to Kings Park for you guys!

You have toned down on your obnoxiousness lately to mostly baiting us, which is good. ;-)

  • @Letgo (Comment 52) : I like the idea of that virtual sports ground you just described.

Imagine having the latest greatest PVR with user sound input, broadcasting all cheering and jeering of the fans into the empty stadium with only the players and camera and sound tech there.

Multichoice can charge us an extra R65 per month for this feature.

Aah, the future of sport, no more traffic jams, no more drunk drivers after the game…in soccer there won’t be anymore soccer hooligans.

I am trying so hard to drill that into my daughters’head who just started writing exams for the first time….they can lose so many unecessary points if they dont READ the question properly! So…guess that teaching mode is still in me!
