Johan Ackermann has named his Lions side to face the Melbourne Rebels at Coca-Cola Park on Saturday.

The Lions have lost a number of key men in the backline, with James Kamana taking over from the injured Andries Coetzee and Lionel Mapoe moving from outside centre to win in place of Deon van Rensburg. Former Sharks man Waylon Murray will start in the number 13 jersey for the first time since his serious knee injury last year.

Tian Meyer is also out injured, meaning a start for Mike Bondesio and a return to the match 22 for Ross Cronje.

Lions: 15 James Kamana, 14 Lionel Mapoe, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Butch James, 11 Anthonie Volminck, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Michael Bondesio, 8 Joshua Strauss (captain), 7 Grant Hattingh, 6 Derick Minnie, 5 Franco van der Merwe, 4 Hendrik Roodt, 3 Jacobie Adriaanse, 2 Callie Visagie, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.
Replacements: 16 Martin Bezuidenhout, 17 Ruan Dreyer, 18 Etienne Oosthuizen, 19 Jaco Kriel, 20 Ross Cronje, 21 JR Esterhuizen, 22 Ruan Combrinck.

  • What happened to Warren Whiteley? Injured or not picked?

  • @Grasshopper (Comment 1) : If a Lions player is not in the matchday 22 it’s pretty safe to assume he’s injured. ;)

  • I just wonder if the Lions season would have been different if not for all the injuries?

  • @Mutley (Comment 9) : if only they did not work all season just to beat the Sharks they would have had a few more wins… ;)

  • I will be watching with interest.

If the Lions don`t get a result against the struggling Rebels without Beale, it confirms our theory that they only ” get up” for the Sharks and doze during the rest of the competition.

Come on lions, kick some aussie butt!

  • I hope we win this one but I’m not holding my breath, the Lions can’t finish and it has been a problem for years now.
