Stormers secure domestic crown

In downing the Cheetahs in sodden Bloemfontein this weekend, the Stormers managed to secure the Super Rugby South African conference title for the second year running.

While it may not have been the best day for running rugby, the Stormers, as they have done so many other times this season, did exactly what they needed to do and in some ways, showed both the Sharks and the Bulls that bonus points can often be nothing more than a poor man’s substitute for winning games. The Chiefs are again well within their grasp as well and with a good win against the Melbourne Rebels in their last game (dare we say, with four tries?) the Stormers could even push for a first-place over-all finish.

The Bloemfontein success was the Stormers’ thirteenth in fifteen starts this season and both fans of the team and those who support other sides will surely concede that the consistency that Alister Coetzee’s men have displayed in Super Rugby this year has been truly remarkable, especially considering their at-times ludicrous injury toll. They are still vulnerable, though, in that the Brumbies could pull ahead if the Stormers don’t manage at least a single point this weekend, pushing the Stormers back into third. That scenario looks quite unlikely, though and I think that the Stormers are now as safe a bet for the semis as you can find.

Whatever else happens, though, they’ll know that the South African conference trophy will be staying at Newlands for another year. Well done, Stormers!

  • Congrats to the Stormers, only losing 2 games takes something.

I did try to watch this title clinching game but the Wimbledon ladies final ultimately offered far greater entertainment for a neutral watcher.

  • Good luck in Oz and NZ Sharks and Bulls, we’ll be putting our feet up and waiting on our next opponent. Hoping it will be South African. If it’s any consolation Sharks, I’m tipping you guys to beat the Brumbies in Canberra.

Now lets just hope the Hurricanes can pull one of against the Chiefs, or at least hold them to three tries.

  • Well done Stormers and well done Chiefs. Brumbies need a single point to secure the top Aussie spot, which the should get as they are playing the Blues.

  • Well done Stormers. It may be a nonsense trophy but I still wouldn’t have minded the Sharks winning it.
