In an interesting development in the Australian conference, the Reds leapfrogged the Brumbies when they scored a bonus point victory against the Waratahs. Earlier in the day the Brumbies came up against the under performing Blues and couldn’t manage one bonus point in their loss, the only point they would have needed to secure their spot in the knock out rounds. Instead the Brumbies are now sitting on 58 log points and are in real danger of dropping out of the playoffs completely.
The two teams that did benefit from the poor showing from the Brumbies and would have kept a close eye on proceedings this morning are the Sharks and the Bulls. The Brumbies, with their surprising loss this morning , ended their last game of the general season on 58 log points, 10 games won, 73 points difference, 41 tries, 10 Try difference, the sequence in which a draw will be broken.
The Bulls, who are playing the Lions, are now standing on 54 log points, 9 games won, 86 points difference, 46 tries, 10 Try difference, which means if they win against the Lions this afternoon they will pass the Brumbies into the playoffs.
More importantly though ,what do the Sharks need against the Cheetahs? We’re currently standing on 54 log points, 9 games won, 69 points difference, 43 tries scored, 12 Try difference, which means the Sharks need to win against the Cheetahs by at least 4 points. Even if we don’t score one try in the match. This will leave us on the same points difference as the Brumbies, but with two more tries scored, it will be enough to be placed above them on the final log. I sincerely hope we win by more than 4 points though.
The good thing is that the Sharks can just go out there and concentrate on their game, build a lead, build some momentum for their next game. And looking at the log stats of the Bulls and Sharks and the opposition they’re playing this afternoon, it looks like that team will be the Reds.
