Cooper to miss Sharks clash

The Reds have lost Quade Cooper for their play-off match against the Sharks this weekend, after the player was cited for a dangerous tackle on countryman Berrick Barnes.

Cooper has been banned for one match, which will make him available for the semi-finals, should the Reds beat the Sharks in Brisbane.

This will force the Reds into a backline shuffle, with either Ben Lucas or Mike Harris stepping into the flyhalf jersey.

  • Does this even out the loss of Steyn and / or Lambie?

  • I’m not sure how I feel about this.

This might just motivate the Reds and have them come out even harder to win the game.

What do you mean? You want me to predict the outcome of the match? If so, I’ll wait until I see the teamsheets..

    I kinda agree with you.

With Cooper there, you know he will run the show, so by putting pressure and cutting him off, you cut off their backline.

But by him not being there, will they still try the flair or will they keep it tighter, so it makes the team as a whole, a lot more unpredictable..

  • Imo with Cooper there, and our loosie(s) focusing on him, he would’ve lost his cool, and essentially mean nothing to them. Which means their entire backline would’ve been nullified. Ala Cooper of the World Cup where he quite honestly just sucked….

Now with him not there, their game plan might change…. And we won’t be able to put that much pressure on their backs… Now their backline might come into the game???

  • I think it’s good news, as any bad news for the other team must then be good news for us.

Quade has been important for them in the last few weeks. They have done well without him too, but now we don’t have to put too much of our energy into one player then maybe slipping up with other players.

    I’m already getting nervous.

The Sharks can do this, they just have to put in a good 80min performance.

  • The Reds with Genia-Cooper just looked so much better than the other 9-10 combos they had to use. I think this is actually a benefit to the Sharks.

However I am worried about the Sharks mentally at this stage of the season. That first half performance against the Cheetahs did not like a team that was fighting for a playoff spot. I know the team was disrupted by not having Bismarck and Alberts starting, and Beast not able to make the 22 – but still that was a very flat-footed display by everyone in the first half

  • Of course this is good news for the Sharks. Cooper and genia have been playing great rugby over the past few weeks and Cooper’s absence will definitely be a blow to the Reds.

  • With Cooper not available, it certainly cuts down their options. Got my tickets for the game but it is not a friendly place to be a Sharks supporter.

  • We will definately miss Steyn on defence. He can tackle anyone 5 metres back (ask Ebersohn). If we allow the Reds to get quick ball in the ruck and miss first time tackles in the midfield, we could be in for a long morning. That said, i feel Whitehead and Jordaan has got what it takes on defence and attack…

  • @VanWilder (Comment 15) : I’ve actually missed what Whitehead has to bring to the backline at 12. It’s different than Steyn, but I like the way he plays there, very straight and very aware of opportunities on his outside. Same for Bosman, never lets a chance to put his centre partner into a gap slip by, something Steyn can definitely work on.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 15) : @Letgo (Comment 16) : Both good points! What a luxury to now have both these options available to us at 12 (outside of the play-offs) when considering where we were a year ago!

Exactly….the Sharks need to target Genia….Marcell must never let Genia out of his sight.

Neutralise Genia and the game is half won.

  • @Letgo (Comment 16) : so true. My only concern against the Reds is that when we allow them a free-flowing, fast paced game, we are going to play catch up the whole time. We should contest EVERY ruck and force players backwards on defence (the same thing we did with the Bulls).

@vanmartin (Comment 17) : yip, we actually thought that Marius Joubert would fix everything

  • @VanWilder (Comment 25) : If the team follows the cycle of 1 up and 1 down game, we should expect a similar effort to the ones against the Bulls and Stormers.

But we need to boss the breakdown on attack and defense.
