In something of an unexpected move, both the Sharks and the Bulls will have South African referees for their Super Rugby play-off games this weekend.

SANZAR has confirmed the appointments for the first round of qualification games – erroneously referred to as “quarter finals” in some circles – with Jaco Peyper and Jonathan Kaplan both rewarded for consistent form throughout the regular season.

Peyper will take charge as the Crusaders face the Bulls in Christchurch in the earlier game, while Kaplan will be in the middle as the Reds face the Sharks in Brisbane later in the day.

  • Looking at the last two weeks, I would’ve preferred Peyper… ;-)

  • @Letgo (Comment 4) : I don’t think the Reds will be too upset. Kaplan is very harsh on the sharks.

  • Not sure if thats a boost for the Sharks.

Kaplan loves to show how unbiased he is by completely blowing against the team he’s thought to be biased towards.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 8) : Because we have 5 other loosies. Jean was injured until very late in the season. He’s competing for a spot with Alberts and Coetzee. Kanko offers line-out options, is still a Sprinbok and is in the form of his life. Botes has been with the team since the start. You can only play that many loose forwards. Plum has finally come to his senses and decided to play our more than capable locks at lock. There’s only so much place in one team. That’s the way life goes.

Don’t worry, Jean will get plenty of chances to prove himself during the CC and will by then be completely over his injury and ready to play himself back into super rugby contention.

  • at least we dont have bryce..remember how that turned out.Anyways the sharks need to beat the reds with or without the ref..no need to rely on the ref whe you have 15 good enough players to beat anyone.Lets hope the boys dont pull a 2011 and come out guns blazing.I really want to see the guys show true character as we know as inconsistant as the sharks have been when they perform they show greatness.

  • @Letgo (Comment 12) : understand 100%. Its wonderful to have such depth in the loose forward department, but i feel for Deysel. I`m a huge fan, hope he can be patient. Also great that Plum puts so much trust in our youngster (Marcell and Du toit). We as fans have been calling for it the last few seasons.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 14) : I think Deysel knows why he’s not part of the Super Rugby plans and I think he’s happy not to have been forced back to early again and get himself injured again. that knee of him has been a big problem. His injury should be fine now and he should be fresh and ready to put in a few huge performances for us in the CC. I also think Plum (if Keegan is with the Boks) may make him captain for the CC.

  • @VanWilder (Comment 14) : Going to another union won’t help him. We have so many great loosies current and up and coming, even with his talent, he’ll find it hard to open up a starting place in any SA team.

I do think he should be selected ahead of Keegan at 6 though. If Keegan doesn’t play 8, he should be playing of the bench (if all our loosies are fit). We have Deysel and Botes who is better than he is there. Here’s the best Sharks combo’s imo.

    Kanko/Keegan/Alberts/Marcell
    Alberts/Marcell/Deysel
    Marcell/Deysel/Botes

    Or even

    Alberts
    Marcell
    Deysel

    A huge loose trio
