Cheetahs confirm Sadie coup

The Cheetahs have swooped on an unhappy Johann Sadie, confirming the signing of the young centre this morning, who will represent his new union in the Super Rugby campaign in 2013.

The Bulls have apparently released Sadie from his contract with the Bulls, allowing the player to talk to other unions, but will only allow the player to leave at the conclusion of the Currie Cup, starting in a month’s time.

Sadie has been struggling with injury as well as having to compete for his preferred centre jersey, and his lack of game time is apparently one of the big reasons he has decided to move on.

Sadie will now represent a third union in as many years, after the Bulls convinced the young star to leave Western Province last year.

  • What will be interesting to see is:

    a) If the Kings get into Super Rugby next year, and
    b) if they do, who will they sign?

@Zibbie (Comment 4) : Anymore news on the proposed tournament with Japanese and Argentinian clubs that the Lions were looking at as an alternative?

  • I’m glad we let him go.

At the time we had TWG13, JDV and De Jongh ahead of him.

Seems the WP brains trust made the correct decision!!

No idea . What i understand at this stage (Nothing official. just hear say). Is that the Kings took the 40 mil and the Lions will stay in SR .

But i would love if SARU could think beyond Super rugby . Have 5 teams in Super rugby . And then teams like Boland Griquas Kings Pumas get to play in Europe . More exposure . More sponsorships . better for SA rugby .

I was wondering the same because now he could be behind Ebersohn in the pecking order.

Regardless, it’s not going to be a very strong defensive midfield.

Might have to look at Sadie as a winger, for a while at least. It’d solve that problem for the Cheetahs in the meantime.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 12) : ya they lack quality wingers,Naka’s been chopping and changing all season on the wing, particularly right wing

  • @Pokkel (Comment 10) : My thoughts exactly Ebersohn is VC as far as i know. So either Sadie is being looked at as a 12 or bench option. I cant see either being a great 12, but if had to play 12 id pick Ebersohn. Guess time will time…but as they say the grass is not always greener on the other side. Take note all school boys signing for the Bulls…

  • Sadie is CLASS, just because he struggled at the Bulls doesn’t mean he’s suddenly a bad player. He suffered some injuries and it just didn’t work for him…that happens in sport. Will be a great signing for the Cheetahs when fully fit.

  • I read somewhere else that Ebersohn is actually a 12 that converted to 13. Apparently he played more 12 at school. Not sure how true it is though.

Only problem with Ebersohn 12 and Sadie 13 will be defence.

  • @lostfish (Comment 20) : the coup is getting him to agree to a salary of R12.50 and a pack of Peter Stuyvesant every month.
