Ankle surgery rules du Toit out

Veteran reporter Louis de Villiers of Beeld reports that young Sharks lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has had to undergo an operation on his troublesome ankle and as such will play no further part in Super Rugby this season.

Du Toit, still just 19 years old, made a huge impact playing on the flank for the Junior Springbok team in their Junior World Championship-winning campaign earlier in the year. In his first Super Rugby start shortly afterwards, he played a superb opening half against the Bulls before going down with the injury, which saw him replaced at half time.

With the Sharks up against it in their final league match against the Cheetahs a week later, du Toit was again pressed into service, but it wasn’t long before the injury was aggravated, forcing him from the field in that match too.

We’re not yet sure how serious the injury is or what sort of procedure young Steph needed to undergo. We do know, though, that he’s played his last Super Rugby game for the season and must surely be in doubt for the opening stages of the Currie Cup as well.

  • @Franshark (Comment 1) : Maybe “procedure” will be kinder to your sensitive heart ;-)

Am really hoping to see him for the better part of the CC season, he’s a real talent and am super excited about the Sharks’ newly discovered depth at lock.

  • PSDT and Bresler as the number 1 lock pairing at The Sharks…i’m very satisfied with that, Du toit is a natural and Bresler is becoming more and more a beast everyday…Bresler is performing like a class act at the moment…Well done Sharks academy!! Has Bresler played or been called up to namibian squad, yet? Hope not, cos i believe he can offer the Boks something in the future, getting better every game he plays and learning so fast!!
