Get behind the Sharks

After an incredible 80 minute display of winning rugby by the Sharks against the Reds on Saturday, they have rewarded themselves with a semi final game against the Stormers at Newlands this coming Saturday.

After watching a game like that against the Reds I ask the question: why can’t they play like that every weekend?

It’s almost like they lose faith in their ability to be the best and stand back for the other teams to go through, almost like they don’t deserve to be there, or play as well as the other teams.

Well, it’s time for them to realise that they are one of the best teams in the competition, they have some of the best players in their positions and they’ve got fans that believe in them, they should just start believing in themselves.

A season that’s been no different from previous ones, with a lot of close games going in their favour and also a few going against them, they really had their fate in their own hands, especially after the Lions game, I’m sure most thought another mid table finish will have to be good enough.

But as we got to know and love the Sharks by now, they sometimes perform the impossible when their backs are against the wall and they have nowhere else to go but forward.

They gave us a bit of hope after outscoring the Bulls 4 tries to 1 to beat them 32 – 10 in their second last game and picking up another bonus point win against the Cheetahs beating them 34 – 15, securing an away play offs spot against the Reds in Brisbane.

Another mammoth task was waiting for the Sharks, and again very few gave them any chance to beat the defending champions in their own back yard, but again the Sharks have almost become like the French, they can beat any them on any day, but they can also lose to any team on any given day. (must be Freddy’s influence)

On the day the team that pitched was the one that can beat any team on any day and played as a team that deserves to be go to the finals.

They dominated from kick off, their forward game was strong, hitting the rucks and cleaning quick ball, their backs were running hard, they defended like it was their last game and they played for 80min, something we don’t see that often, and in the end it paid off scoring 3 tries to 2 and an impressive 30 – 17 scoreline.

If we shift our attention to the game at hand, the Sharks need to repeat the way they’ve been playing in their last 3 outings, they need to take the game to the Stormers and not wait for them to score the first points.

If the forwards stay the same as the last game, 7 out of the 8 forwards are current Springboks, surely we should win that battle. Bismarck is as strong and aggressive as always, Beast is scrumming well and also a few good ball carries, Coetzee is just playing in a different league all together and when a player is normally handed the captaincy his own playing ability takes a dip, it’s had quite the opposite effect on Captain Keegan where he is just improving with every game.

Amongst the backs it’s a different story, especially in the mid field, with Paul Jordaan in doubt, Bosman might have to form that wall of defense with Whitehead. The back three is currently playing great rugby with JP at his best, Mvovo that will out sprint you with half a gap and nobody is getting past Ludik.

Another key factor will be the generals. Michalak is just playing brilliantly at the moment, his distribution to his backline is good and there’s no fault with his place kicking.

All and all the Sharks just need to be focusing on what they’ve been doing these last couple of weeks, the type of rugby they playing currently is not a case of adjusting your game to beat your opponents but it’s a type of game that can win finals.

  • If the Sharks can break through that Stormers defense they will score tries, and if the Sharks defend like last week they’ll make it impossible for Stormers to score any.

Well, I guess they’ve done their job of helping the ABs win a World Cup, so they can move on now. I’m sure they’ll land lucrative “retainer” packages with the NZRU.

  • I think the thing with the Sharks team at the moment is that they are enjoying their rugby. They are playing with smiles on their faces. That leads to great confidence, and confidence leads to winning. Winning repeatedly leads to a winning culture. I will be behind the boys all the way!

The Sharks seriously need to employ a decent sport psychologist. I’m convinced it’ll result in at least a bit more consistency throughout the season.
