Go for the jugular*, Boys!

So, after many, many weeks of rugby, some games left us ecstatic, other left us pulling out our hair (those of us who have any, anyway), we have finally reached the play-off stages of the Superugby 2012. And guess what? We are still around! Now isn’t that smart and dandy? ;)

First of all, of this hurdle lying ahead, we are facing the team topping not only the Conference log, but also the overall standings.  Secondly, we are playing a true “Safrican” derby, and we all know this is normally HUGE. Thirdly, we are playing a Team who will be enjoying home ground advantage. And last but not least, we have travelled and played a hard game, whilst the Stormers had a nice break.

Bit of a ‘taai toffie’?  Perhaps…

Now, most of you who follow me on twitter and who follows this blog will be under no illusion as to how I feel about the Stormers’ game. Yet, they are topping the log, losing only 2 games. (At this stage I need not really mention the two games they lost was against opposition still and/or possibly still to face in this tournament).

But….

Do I think the Stormers have what it takes to win a major tournament like this? Simply put – no. Especially not with the teams left that they might still possibly face at this stage – teams who like to score tries, teams who can score 2 tries in a matter of 10 minutes. In other words, high intensity rugby playing teams. (However to keep the peace with Wes, Claytie, Ludz and some others – I will eat humble pie if they manage to go on and win this tournament.)

They have managed thus far to focus on winning by defending (and I take my hat off to them for managing this! Heavens know HOW..), but I have not seen any or much attacking play from them this season.

Firstly it seems that teams have in recent weeks started to penetrate that defensive line.  So their “weapon of choice” is showing not quite so effective anymore. This means that teams, who play more of an attacking game, will more than likely be able to put two or three tries up on the scoreboard. And teams who have a decent defence will be able to defend a lead, once one has been established.

The fact that they have been playing this defending type of game, also leads me to believe that if they are trailing, that they will not be able to catch up. Unless of course the team they play against has a major defensive gap. And looking at the second half of last week’s game between the Sharks and Reds, where the Sharks basically had to defend a lead, the Sharks definitely do not fall in this category, only letting slip that one try right at the end of that match.

So, seeing that Plum reckons travelling cannot be blamed, nor be a factor, what I would suggest we do on Saturday would be something like this:

From that first whistle of Steve, PULL in there! Give it guts, grunt, speed. Attack ferousiously and take them by surprise.  We need to pull a 2010 Currie Cup final on them. And we need to get ahead….FAST. We need to keep the intensity and then at the same time we need to be able to defend like we did against the Reds – this time, just without that last slip.

All in all – we need to go for the kill. Hard and Fast.

GO FOR THE JUGULAR*, BOYS!

* “go for the jugular

- to attack fiercely in order to have no doubt about winning “

  • If Plum utilises his bench effectively there won’t be any sign of tired or jet-lagged players!! Jean Deysel is going to run over everyone!
