Allister Coetzee has named his side to face the Sharks in the most anticipated match of the season – the 2nd 2012 SupeRugby semi final which kicks off at 17:05 on Saturday at Newlands.

The Stormers coach has decided not to risk Duane Vermeulen in what many will describe as a very obvious decision based on the player’s lack of game time over the last few months.

Deon Fourie will start at 8 which frees up space for an additional prop on the bench. The Stormers will certainly need it considering their opponents have an all Bok front row who have been playing together for a few seasons and should test the uncapped Stormers front row.

Stormers team:

15 – Joe Pietersen
14 – Gio Aplon
13 – Juan de Jongh
12 – Jean de Villiers (c)
11 – Bryan Habana
10 – Peter Grant
9 – Dewald Duvenage
8 – Deon Fourie
7 – Rynhardt Elstadt
6 – Siya Kolisi
5 – Andries Bekker
4 – Eben Etzebeth
3 – Brok Harris
2 – Tiaan Liebenberg
1 – Steven Kitshoff

Reserves:

16 – Deon Carstens
17 – Frans Malherbe
18 – De Kock Steenkamp
19 – Don Armand
20 – Louis Schrueder
21 – Burton Francis
22 – Gerhard van den Heever

  • Looks pretty even.

I think we have better quality players on the bench though.

  • They certainly have us in the centres, but with the lack of try scoring all season, it nullifies that threat altogether..

Even match awaits us, I’m sure..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : On paper we should take this… Quite comfortable as well… Is the travelling factor maybe leveling it out a bit?

The travel is 100% a mental thing..

If we can overcome that, and play like we have over the last few weeks, we can take this comfortably..

Whether we do that though, is debatable..

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) :

I don’t agree, you might be able to overcome it mentally but there are definite physical strain on the players.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : I have to agree with Pokkel on this, while a significant percentage of jet lag is mental, there are significant physical strains related to jet lag. I do believe that if the players are managed correctly, a week is sufficient time to overcome the physical strains of jet lag.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 11) : I also think a week should be sufficient… I mean they are regular flyers, so their bodies must surely also adapt alot better / quicker than the average joe…

  • How are Jannie & Beast going to relish playing against Deon Carstens!!Go [email protected]Richard Ferguson (Comment 9) : Remember player management is a scientific thing & with modern trends & technology, our players should beat the fatigue thing.Saturday is but a couple of days away & it is only a 2 hour trip to Cape Town, so let’s stand behind OUR team and let them make a Storm(ers) in a teacup!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 12) : Howzit Pokkel. I do watch most of the matches online. There are several live feeds, and several nice people upload the full games to YouTube within a few days. Great way to keep up. DirecTV in the States has the rights to broadcast all Southern Hemisphere Rugby, including the Rugby Championships and SupeRugby. They broadcast all games in those competitions.

  • @SharksRTB (Comment 13) : As I understand it, there are certain things one can do to minimize the effects. I’m not sure if being very accustomed to travel helps or not, but I am sure that a professional athlete in top physical condition should recover faster than the average Joe.

  • Found an interesting article. I am sure a number of you have read it already, but here goes. http://www.superxv.com/news/super15_rugby_news.asp?id=36012
Coetzee says if they don’t pitch there will be no next week. I wonder if the inimitable PdV is his speech writer.
