The Aussies win something

With Australia’s participation in this year’s Super Rugby campaign over, the Australians have announced their Super Rugby Player of the Year, with Will Genia walking away with the award for the second straight year.

The Reds were knocked out of the competition last weekend, losing at home to a rampant Sharks outfit, after sneaking into the playoffs on the last weekend of the regular season. They pipped the Brumbies, who were Australian conference leaders for the entire competition, expect when it really counted.

Scott Higginbotham was apparently beaten by a single vote in the race for the Player of the Year.

Genia joins an elite group of players who have won this award in consecutive years, with George Smith and Chris Latham previous back-to-back winners.

Reds coach Ewen McKenzie won Coach of the Year, surprisingly, after taking the Reds to a second play-off spot in two years. Brumbies coach Jake White, who surprised all with a competitive team this year, is allowed to feel hard done by, in my opinion.

  • Yip, I also think Jake did a great job with the Brumbies, especially for the turnaround he made with that team in such a short time. He was also very unlucky to lose his 10 halfway through the competition, but still maintained a good record and his team just slipped at the last hurdle.

Next year I think they’ll be even better.

  • Chirp of the day on Twitter: @jeanlegrange: Still quite embarrassing that Aus are handing out awards while SA & NZ are busy for 2 more weeks.

  • How many sheep did Genie win?! ;-)
After his humble and respectful post match interview in the sharks game I don’t think he deserves anything!!

  • It’s not exactly winning if you give the prize yourself. An Australian prize given to an Aussie player… Yeah, whatever. I am more curious to see who wins the domestic player awards in SA and NZ. For the SA conference, I feel Etzebeth, Coetzee, Pietersen, Beast, Bismarck, de Villiers and Kolisi are the likely options.
