The odds are in your favour

There are only two rugby matches this weekend, but the sporting world carries on with many other sporting codes to keep you busy, and potentially, make you money.

First and foremost, there are the semi-finals to consider, and this time of the year is always the best to make a few bucks. If you backed the Crusaders and Sharks last weekend, like I did, you would have made a few rand. And I can tell you know, if you back those two again, the odds are in your favour!

The first match is a New Zealand derby, and honestly, I can see it going only one way. Nothing can stop the Crusaders rampaging their way into yet another Super Rugby final. The Chiefs might have had a week off, but the momentum being carried by the Saders will be too much.

Chiefs – 17/10
Crusaders – 5/10

The second match is the big one for all South Africans, and for Sharks supporters, the offer could be too good to let by. Yes the Stormers are favourites, with the odds reflecting something like a 5 point head start for the Cape based team. We have discussed the Sharks’ chances at length, and if you thing the Sharks can pull it through, why not make some money in the process?

Stormers – 5/10
Sharks – 18/10

If you fancy a double, like me, you can land yourself with 33/10 odds on the Crusaders and Sharks winning, meaning you will win more than R300 for every R100 you bet. Not bad odds those, especially for only two matches going your way.

For other sporting odds, specifically looking towards the Olympics and the Proteas facing the Poms, click through to Marshalls at the top of the page, and have a look at what’s available. If you need any help navigating through, or do not understand the odds and what the risks are, drop me a mail and I will help as far as I can – [email protected]

  • I’m backing the Sharkies. Even though the Stormers will try to ready themselves for an early Sharks onslaught, I think in the back of their minds they think that the jet lag will be too much for the Sharks and this will be their downfall.

  • @Letgo (Comment 1) : I like the fact that the stormers have been doing most of the talking. Hardly a peep from our camp. Always encouraging. Plus with the cape hype machine, all the pressure is on them really. Question. If we go 10 points up somehow, do they have the attack to fight back? Go sharks

  • @jako (Comment 4) : The Stormers have the abillity to pressure teams into making mistakes or conceding penalties. All it takes are 3 of those and the 10 point lead is cut to only 1.

  • Stormers have proved in both the games they lost that they can’t chase a game. Should The Sharks build up a lead they should be able to hold on to it as long as they stay disciplined near the red zone on defence and not give Grant or Pietersen any shots at goal.

Whoever plays the best brand of rugby will win. Forget about the other crap.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 15) : that is very true and i don’t buy this crap that we played our final last week when we won the reds. if it was a bridge too far for us to win, then we shouldn’t have. we will be there to take the game even if it is on the skin of our teeth.

  • @hendrikp (Comment 15) :
You don’t have to think it before every tackle and you don’t even have to say it or say that you think, but if in the back of your mind you think the other team will tire at some point and you’ll then be able to get through their tackles easier or won’t have to tackle that hard any more, it will be enough to influence your level of play. That’s what I think anyway.

But you’re right, the team that plays the best on the day should win.

I’ve been down this sad road before. Hyped up supporters start writing off the opposition before the game only to come down hard later.

The Stormers are a quality side with every objective factor in their favour – Sharks will have to play amazing rugby to beat them.

I wouldnt go quite that far. Some fans feel more of a need to blog in tough times when they are unhappy (anyone seen klempie or siorc lately?) and some may feel the urge to post more in happy times, when they have more to say.

I dont have an issue with either, provided that after you take the step of posting, it would be better to post in both good and bad times – cos supporters shouldnt vary in their support based on results.

My issue, with both old and new posters, is that we shouldnt suddenly write our team up and disregard the achievements of this Stormers team, who in making 2 consecutive SR knock-offs and only losing 2 games this season, have shown that they are consistently good performers.

Writing off their attack seems silly to me considering that none of us made fun of this exact playing style when Jake White used it to win a WC. In the face of all the pro pretty rugby critics, we said that the discipline and ferocity of our side was a different kin of beauty to behold.

No different for the Stormers now – a very god side who will take some beating.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 31) : Agreed to a certain extend.

Especially after good results I sometimes sit back and wonder. What`s the use of all of us patting each other on the back? ( “JP`s the best in the world” followed by I agree times 50 LOL )

We`re mostly sharks supporters here so there`s nobody except for maybe Zib to chirp after a good result for us.
It`s no real use congratulating the players here on a good performance cause we don`t know for sure if they ever visit this site.

After a disappointment however we all come up with suggestions as to how to improve our situation. It makes for better banter material!

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 34) : I most definitely feel we have a Table mountain to climb (mainly due to the travel factor) – so I won’t be overly disappointed if we don’t take the Stormers tomorrow.

However based on how the guys have been playing for the past matches I am quietly confident that the guys can pull off an upset and make Super history – be the first team ever to win a playoff / semi after travelling twice across the Indian.

It all depends on the day, bad calls from the ref, off day on the park for the players – food poisoning  ; you just can never say what’s going to happen on game day.
