The Sharks kept the magic alive and beat the Stormers 26-19 at Newlands this evening to win a spot in next weekend’s Super Rugby Final.

John Plumtree’s side, which showed some late positional changes with Riaan Viljoen brought in at fullback, edged the first-half contest thanks to a great Louis Ludik, set up by a pinpoint up-and-under from the very same Viljoen. Fred Michalak’s penalty and a drop-goal saw them hold a 13-6 lead at the break. Peter Grant knocked over two penalties for the hosts in the opening period.

The Sharks built their win in the third quarter, though, with JP Pietersen scoring a cracking try to open up a 14-point lead with 20 minutes to go. The Stormers came back strongly, though, with a Gio Aplon try and some more good place-kicking from Grant bringing them right back in, trailing just 23-19 with about 70 minutes on the clock. It was Michalak who had the last laugh, though; his second drop extended the lead back to 7 points and despite some frantic last-minute defence on their own line, the Sharks managed to come away with the win.

Keegan Daniel and his team will now fly to Hamilton to play the Chiefs in Saturday’s final.

Scorers:
Stormers (19): Try: Gio Aplon. Conversion: Peter Grant. Penalties: Grant (4)
Sharks(26): Tries: Louis Ludik, JP Pietersen. Conversions: Fred Michalak (2). Penalties: Michalak (2). Drop Goals: Michalak (2)

  • This will go down as 1 of the most gutsy, exciting and characterful win I have witnessed in my 36 years of watching the game. To come to the cauldron which was Newlands, after all that travel , and to so comprehensively outplay the Stormers, speaks volums for the talent and mindsets that this Sharks team possess in spades….A huge and heartfelt congratulations, all the best for the final…it will take another huge effort of mind, body and will, but it can be done and the whole country will be screaming for the Sharks Saturday….gp make us proud Sharks…As for my Stormers, a lot of soul searching required….and please get us a proper fetcher and tighthead Allister!

  • What the hell happened?

About 3 weeks ago, I was one of the guys that didn’t have ANY hope of the Sharks even reaching the “quarterfinals”. Plum apparently applying for the Blues coaching post showed to ME that the Sharks isn’t his hype anymore. So I frankly hoped the Sharks loose dismally in their last round robin game just so that Plum could get the boot….

And now? All I can say is that I’m astonished in how the Sharks are suddenly playing! What the hell happened?

Culling Song was here to enjoy it with me and I have to agree that a certain game in 2007 haunted me towards the end.
The spirit within the Sharks camp is something I haven’t seen in a long time.
I have watched the celebration a couple of times and this Sharks team is passionate enough to make the impossible happen. It’s going to be a hell of an ask but just maybe they can win this thing.
Win or lose next week I’m so proud of what has already been achieved.

  • So psyched to have seen this game, it was one of those landmark events in the game of rugby! Hard luck Stormers, you gave it your all, played hard, and the game was still in the balance right at the death, and although you lost in the end, it should not detract from everything you achieved through the season.

Sharks, you were simply magnificent in every facet of the game, and demonstrated beyond doubt that you are the best team in SA (consistency issues aside)! Awe-frikkin’-some!!

A few observations on the game, starting with the Stormers:

    1) Jean de Villiers, what a class act. Gracious in defeat, never deflects responsibility for the loss, but more importantly, influential on the field, both as player and leader. Thrilled to have him as Bok captain, and hope his reign may continue for a long time. Absolute legend of the game.

    2) Eben Etzebeth vs. Bismarck; unstoppable force meets immovable object, immovable object winds up on his ass. Monstrous!

    3) Bryan Habana may not be the player of old, but he still caused me heart palpitations when he touched the ball. Remains a quality player.

    4) How underrated is Deon Fourie? Given how many roles he’s had to fulfill recently, and the amplomb he’s done it with, I’d say this is a super handy guy to have in any squad.

    5) Andries Bekker must be causing Heyneke Meyer sleepless nights about depth in the Bok 5 jersey. Blessed with all the requisite attributes, but lacking in the “cometh the hour, cometh the man” qualities to truly step into Victor Matfield’s shoes.

    6) Saying that Juan de Jongh is not a test quality player is like saying Hitler disliked Jews; factually correct, but a massive understatement.

    7) Hopefully this game will also put paid to the misguided notion that Peter Grant, Joe Pietersen and Tiaan Liebenberg can ever be Bok contenders. Crumbled under pressure like a Weetbix under a tank track.

    As for the Sharks:

    1) Jannie du Plessis, for a person who passed a medical degree you sure do some stupid things sometimes…

    2) Anton Bresler must surely be the most underrated lock in SA; I love watching this guy play; the commitment he brings is a thing of beauty.

    3) Captain Keegan, I salute you as player and as captain; the amount of growth you’ve shown this season is incredible. Glad to have a K-Dawg tattoo

    4) Charl McCleod had a good game, but thought he was still too slow in clearing some of the rucks, and generally speaking, depth at 9 remains an area of concern for me with the Sharks.

    5) JPP, best wing in the world, bar none!

    6) So thrilled that Louis Ludik managed that score; this guys has come in for a lot of flack, and not anough credit during the season, and his response as always has been to wimply work harder. My official Sharks role model.

Now let’s go skin some Chiefs!!

If anything the petition has shown Plum that he has the support from the vast majority of Sharks supporters, if not Sharksworld bloggers. There are a total 15 people that have subscribed to the FB petition (at one stage there were 16 but after the Bulls game one guy went and unliked his like)

Sorry, in the modern world of social media and the availability of information to the world those 15 likes to have Plum removed are in fact a massive, massive thumbs up to him.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 53) : I agree with you about Jean being a great talker, Im not convinced about him being close to the mother Teresa you portray him to be on the field – off it yes but not while the game is on. I was at Newlands for the game and he gets involved in a lot of off the ball stuff that falls into the category of poor sportsmanship. And his constant questioning and moaning to the ref drives me nuts.
