Craig Joubert and Keith Brown will assist Walsh from the sidelines, while Garratt Williamson will make the tough decisions in the TMO seat.

  • There was a knock at the maul just before Ludik’s try. Jonker had his flag out but Walsh just ignored him

Apart from that – I can’t recall anything else

  • I thought he had a pretty good game, but let the Stormers slow our ball down more than he let the Sharks do at the Stormers breakdown. They fell over the ball at the tackle and contested when not releasing, ripped one or two balls after they had gone to ground and he let it all go. The thing is, that kinda played into our hands, because that meant he was a little more lenient on both sides and didn’t go to the whistle anywhere near as much as some other refs would have and the Stormers were really counting on the fact that they would have had more opportunities to go for goal.

That’s the only thing IMO that went our way in this game. The fact that he was more lenient, for both sides.

We’ll see how he does in the final.

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 2) : No, Jonker had his flag out for a foul play against the Stormers and thus Walsh let play continue. You can hear him say, “It’s against blue so I’ll play advantage.”

Jonker stuck his flag out for Bresler being played in the air at the line out.

    That’s how I saw it.

An assistant referees will not put his flag out for a knock-on will he? Isn’t that reserved for foal play?

  • Also, Bob and some stormers supporters are said the pass to Alberts (I think it was before a Fred drop in the second half) was forward. It may well have been forward, but have a second look at Jean de Villiers pass to Aplon for their try. Aplon is about a meter in front of de Villiers when he catches the ball.

If you really want to scrutinize the game like that, then you’ll see just as many bad calls against the Sharks as against the Stormers (you just don’t care about it when you won). I really think Welsh had a decent game, I like that he let the game flow and accept when players really were in the wrong, gave them a chance to play the game. Yes, this played into our hands, because we’re not so dependant on how many penalties the ref gives us, but rather how well we can maintain good possession.

  • @MikeVS (Comment 7) : Now I’ll have to check that again, I thought the flag went out for foul play, but maybe if that was so Welsh would have talked to the infringing player after the try, which he didn’t.

I don’t know if a ref can overrule a call that an assistant made. Can he?

That flag was not for the knock..

The flag was for the Stormers playing the Sharks in the air at the lineout. Walsh spoke to Jean after we converted the try, to warn them against doing it again..

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 10) : I just checked again, he definitely says “Against Blue”, as in the flag is against blue.

I saw the ball going forward, but it rolled down the back of a player on the ground and never actually came of someone’s hand, Bissy then grabbed it. You couldn’t say for sure that the ball came forward of someone’s hand, but I would have called it forward.

Jonker also only puts his flag up after the forward ball thingy, so although Elstad definitely did pull Bresler down, it doesn’t seem like this is the reason for the flag, on further inspection.

The try didn’t come from that ruck though. Mvovo first chased a kick, then there was a ruck and kanko spilled the ball back and Fred set up another ruck on the halfway, the Viljoen made the kick for Ludik.

You can’t really blame the try on that, but if Jonker did call knock, the Welsh must have seen something from his side that indicated that the ball did not come of a Sharks player, but against blue, as he says.

I can’t tell Stormers supporters to let it go, because if it was against the Sharks, I wouldn’t have… so sorry if the ref cheated you. You can no join us in complaining about the lack of a challenge system!

  • @Bokhoring (Comment 27) : agreed. i think he gave them alot more time to correct whatever they were doing wrong than the sharks. He kept on warning the stormers to roll away and release (not that they did that as quick as i would like) but he penalised the sharks a few times without warning…

And the time Jannie stood up from the tackle and played the ball (which is allowable) we got penalised. 10 minutes later, Fourie did exactly the same, but was let go.

He did not have a bad game at all, but he tend to make “home town calls”…

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 55) : @Salmonoid (Comment 58) : I had my nose broken by a bunch of drunk Bulls supporters, just because I had the temerity to walk past Loftus on my way home after the Bulls had lost a game, and the long hair and attire I was sporting on the day did not sit well with their delicate sensibilities.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 72) : Ouch. Definitely beats my incident.

I also used to do the parking for Girls High which is right next to Loftus when I was in school and the attitude of some of those guys. Of course, like any service industry we got our own back on these guys. The one guy who insisted on parking right in the middle of the field at 12 o’clock. He disappeared and we had cars park right around him. And he still came back!

  • @vanmartin (Comment 74) : Yeah but 9 times out of 10 he goes against us anyway so it’s no surprise and the website he has apparently resigned from (but for whom he still writes) has always been pro-Stormers.

I can understand his argument that the system is flawed but comparing us to the Chiefs of 2009 is a bit ridiculous. They played at home in the semi before coming to play the Bulls. They were just shocking on the road.

Think we’ve shown that we can play and win play-off games away from home. Doing it three times in a row is going to be the real hard part.

  • Those Tswane specials seem to have a problem with long hair. I remember a cousin of mine got set on at the Farm Inn because he had long hair and a very “European” outlook of life, this was early 90′s.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 55) : When I was 10 I was harassed by a drunk Bulls fan. He had me by the front of my Sharks jersey shouting at me in a foreign language. Thank goodness his friends had some sense and pulled him off me. Scared the crap out of me.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 76) : “European” outlook… I like that

My incident was early-to-mid-90′s; tackled from behind by 4 or 5 drunk Bulls supporters, who then proceeded to kick 7 kinds of hail Mary out of me… Had to crawl in under a parked car to escape, at which point hauling me out presented to much effort for them in their inebriated condition. So it’s fair to say I’m not a big fan of Bulls supporters, even though that is something of a generalisation.

“Stressed, need peace and quite….. get down to Newlands this Saturday”

    Q) Whats the difference between the Stormers and OJ Simpson
    A) OJ had a better defence.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 88) : Boeta…got a story on that one.

I heard it twice this morning when I got into work. And then this cute bokkie colleague walks into my office, and congratulates me on the result. Then settles into the chair across from me, and says she’s got a joke for me. So I ask, “Does it involve the Stormers and Sharks?” To which she replies, “What else?”

So I ask her, “So vertel vir my die grap.” And she says, “OK, you know how you spell “hi” in English?” I started chuckling and said, “Haha. I’ve heard this one. You’re not supposed to explain the punchline BEFORE you tell the joke!”

At which point, she got up and vacated my office in a huff.
